Deaf Action is a deaf-led charity that works to support and celebrate deaf people. Established in 1835, their mission is to empower deaf people to achieve their potential and participate in society with equality of rights, access and opportunity. They recognise the diversity and varying needs of deaf people including deaf users of British Sign language (BSL), and those who are deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing. From dealing with isolation through our Befriending services and social clubs, to practical support through specialist equipment, interpreting, lipreading courses, employability and digital skills – their services are designed to remove barriers and make life more fulfilling for deaf and hard of hearing people.
With support from Scottish Government, Deaf Action have designed the SignPort app which will make it easier for deaf people to book interpreters and for public bodies to meet their BSL obligations. They hope to launch the app early in 2025.
Deaf Action successfully delivered the third Edinburgh Deaf Festival in 2024 – a 10 day festival celebrating deaf culture, language and heritage, with more than1600 tickets booked, and 70 events including the first deaf-led theatre production that received 5 star reviews.
