The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), part of Healthcare Improvement Scotland, is seeking participants with lived experience to join a multi-disciplinary group that will update the SIGN guideline on care of deteriorating patients. SIGN has asked for VHS members’ help to identify people willing and able to join this group.
Background
The current SIGN guidelines for acute adult health care in NHS Scotland have been in place since 2012. The guidance and ‘consensus recommendations’ include a 20% reduction in Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios and that 95% of patients should be free from avoidable harm. The consensus recommendations were based on expert opinion for best practice in the management of deteriorating adult patients and underpinned a national approach to care of adult deteriorating patients. They set out the essential elements for prompt and reliable recognition of and appropriate response to deteriorating patients in acute healthcare settings in Scotland.

Reviewing the guidelines
There are two calls for participation:
SIGN is assembling a multidisciplinary group to review the guidelines, and they want to include participants who are able to bring lived experience to the discussion. The work will take place over the next 12 months and group members will be asked to attend around four meetings remotely. Further information is available in the Role description for LE representatives SIGN 139. If you would like to nominate an individual to participate please fill in this form: Application to become involved in SIGN 139 care of deteriorating patient
Additionally, SIGN is keen to get voluntary organisations’ direct views on what this guideline should include, to ensure they take into account the patient and carer perspective. They will consider organisations’ responses when finalising the scope of the guideline. Here is the form you can use to respond: Patient organisation submission form for SIGN 139.
To nominate individuals to participate in the guideline group or submit patient and carer issues for SIGN to consider, or if you have any questions, please email Karen Graham, Patient Involvement Advisor, SIGN, by Monday 25 February 2022.
