How Can Social Marketing Help Us Develop a Strategic Approach to Loneliness?

May 3, 2017

VHS have been working with Glasgow Caledonian University lecturer Brian Smith and his students, who worked in 4 teams to address the following brief for VHS:

“Design a business to business social marketing strategy that identifies the nature and increases the awareness of the issues of loneliness and isolation existing in Scottish society, to targeted governmental and third sector bodies, with the objective of encouraging collaboration between these bodies aimed at achieving a positive public health improvement impact through the increased knowledge, empowerment and co-ordinated activities that such increased collaboration will deliver. Your response to this challenge should include elements of campaign planning, channel selection, audience targeting, messaging and communications, as well as some element of visual creative execution as appropriate.”

Social Marketing practice is guided by ethical principles. It seeks to integrate research, best practice, theory, audience and partnership insight, to inform the delivery of competition sensitive and segmented social change programmes that are effective, efficient, equitable and sustainable.

The outcomes of the exercise were designed to be of practical use and the strategies, ideas and tools will be available to be used by VHS and others, so we are keen to involve those of you with a strong interest in this topic. We were delighted with the response from the teams and the winning group were ‘Time to Talk’. The winning group were invited to the Scottish Government stakeholder meeting on Social Isolation and Loneliness in April in Edinburgh.
