The figures published today showing a 13% fall in deaths caused by drug misuse in Scotland in 2024 are a step in the right direction. However, they are not cause for celebration.
Similar figures for 2023 saw a 12% rise in deaths caused by drug misuse. Progress is precarious and we will not know if today’s figures represent a sustained downward trend for several years to come.
In addition, the gap in the number of drug-related deaths between the most and least deprived communities in Scotland has narrowed but is still unacceptably wide. People in the most deprived areas were still 12 times more likely to die from drugs as those in the least deprived areas.
Third sector organisations have a vital role in helping to prevent deaths related to drug misuse across Scotland, particularly in the communities that most need support. Despite this, many of our members report that they are experiencing funding threats and financial instability. This creates ongoing challenges for delivering sustainable and impactful services.
We will continue to champion the vital role of the third sector with the Scottish Government and other public sector partners to help ensure that meaningful progress is sustained in the years to come.
