Over 54,000 people die in Scotland every year and over 50% of these people will die in hospital.
Research from the University of Glasgow shows one in ten people will die in hospital on their current admission and that nearly one third of them are within the last year of their life. This rises to almost half for the oldest groups of people.
Knowing this presents us with a huge opportunity to think about the potential the hospital provides for advanced care planning and for talking with patients and families about their goals for care when time is becoming short.
How can patients in hospital who are nearing the end of life be identified? What tools and methods seem to have value? What role can hospitals play in thinking more ‘structurally’ about their approach to end of life care? What does this mean for specialist palliative care services and what can be done to support all staff to engage more effectively with the end of life care needs of those for whom they care?
Marie Curie and the University of Glasgow invite you to this important seminar where we will explore the research itself in more detail and also what this means for people in Scotland. Come and participate in the discussion of how we can actively engage patients, families, carers and clinicians in conversations about end of life issues – in particular in the hospital setting.
As the Scottish Government develops a new National Clinical Strategy, a Strategic Framework for Action on End of Life and Palliative Care, and new Integrated Joint Boards look to develop their strategic and local delivery plans there has never been a more pertinent time to look at how people at the end of life receive care in acute settings.
We have an exciting range of speakers lined up, including:
- Professor David Clark, Director of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at University of Glasgow
- Professor Craig White, Divisional Clinical Lead at the Scottish Government
- Others to be confirmed
