DESCRIPTION:We are told that extensive planning is under way to prepare the health service for a no-deal Brexit scenario in England. But what about Brexit’s implications for health and social care in Scotland – how much do we know and understand? \nAt this event there will be a full briefing from Erin McGinley from the Scottish Parliament’s SPICe team\, co-author of Leaving the EU – Implications for Health and Social Care . There will be the opportunity to hear some third sector perspectives on Brexit and health and plenty of time to raise and consider questions. Confirmed to speak are: \n\nNick Hay\, NHS Health Scotland\nDr Neil Henery\, Camphill Scotland\nLindsay Paterson\, The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh\n\nView the event agenda \nRegister for this event here \nWhy attend this event? \n\nGet a comprehensive insight into the issues as seen by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre\nParticipate in a forum for engagement and knowledge sharing\nExplore the concerns – and potential solutions – that are exercising voluntary health organisations\n\nLeaving the EU could have implications for the regulation of health and social care in Scotland. If the UK leaves the single market and customs union there could be difficulties maintaining existing standards and procedures. There are a number of elements of reciprocal healthcare and the free movement of healthcare which could be affected by Brexit.  There is uncertainty surrounding the UK’s membership of\, or cooperation with\, several EU agencies\, that could impact on the availability of medicines\, healthcare techniques and technology. Funding from the EU\, and collaborative relationships\, have had a significant impact on the quality of health research in the UK. There are also issues to be resolved surrounding good laboratory practice\, legislation on blood\, organs\, tissues and cells\, food compositional standards and labelling and data protection. Data suggests the NHS in Scotland may be less reliant on non-UK EU nationals than the NHS elsewhere in the UK\, but our social care services may be more reliant than the NHS. Brexit may present some opportunities in relation to the mutual recognition of qualifications and procurement policy in the NHS. DESCRIPTION:We are set to hold a fascinating international exchange of views and experiences over lunch\, in a round table discussion with Paula Baker\, Manager of the  Braemar Charitable Trust\,  Hamilton\, New Zealand. Paula is coming to Edinburgh this September for the Social Enterprise World Forum  and reached out to VHS to say ‘kia ora!’ and to ask for some help in  building connections with our voluntary and public health sectors whilst she is here. In response we of course said  “ceud mìle fàilte” and offered to pull together a group of people who we thought would share a lot of interests with Paula. \nBraemar Hospital is 100% owned by the Braemar Charitable Trust and is over 90 years old. It is one of the largest private hospitals in New Zealand\, offering a comprehensive range of specialist services. The Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland  is kindly hosting the lunch and round table at their offices in Edinburgh. \nThis is an invitation only event due to limited space\, but please get in touch with Lauren Blair if you have a particular interest in attending.

The reforms are far reaching\, and aim to ensure services are well integrated and that people receive the care they need at the right time and in the right place. SUMMARY:Joint Cross Party Group Meeting: Health Inequalities and Improving Scotland's Health
DESCRIPTION:The Cross-Party Group on Health Equalities and the Cross-Party Group on Improving Scotland’s Health 2021 and Beyond are delighted to invite you to a joint meeting on Tuesday 22 May from 5.30pm to 7pm in Committee Room 4 of The Scottish Parliament.  The meeting will explore health inequalities and the right to health\, with a particular focus on unhealthy environments and empowering communities to improve their health. \nWe have two excellent speakers: \nDr Niamh Shortt\, Reader in Health Geography and co-director of the Centre for Environment\, Society and Health (CRESH)\, University of Edinburgh\, whose research considers how the environment shapes our health\, health behaviours and resulting health inequalities. She focuses on the effect of place and in particular the idea of the locale in which various aspects of the social and natural environment converge to influence health outcomes. Based on the premise that place matters for health\, her research explores a wide range of area effects and considers the implications for health. Niamh’s current work focusses on alcohol and tobacco environments in Scotland and the role of retail density. \nHilda Campbell\, Chief Executive\, COPE Scotland\, a community led service in West Glasgow committed to finding new ways of addressing mental/emotional distress and promoting resilience and self-management through the principles of co-production and design. 24 years on\, COPE Scotland has supported more than 20\,000 people. Hilda will explain how health inequalities can be challenged through a community development and assets based approach that engages the knowledge and skills of people with lived experience in identifying their own solutions as well as designing local services. \nThe meeting will be co-chaired by Clare Haughey MSP and David Stewart MSP. \nThis meeting is now fully booked and we have a waiting list.  \nPlease get in touch if you would like to be added to the waiting list. \n****Please note that due to the likely level of interest we will confirm to that you have secured a place at least one week in advance. SUMMARY:Best Start Foods: making the most of the Healthy Start reform
DESCRIPTION:Join Nourish Scotland and Voluntary Health Scotland on 22nd May to discuss how the reform of Healthy Start into Best Start Foods in Scotland can best benefit our low-income families.\nWe will hear from the Scottish Government’s Welfare Foods team about their proposals for a new Best Start Foods scheme\, and from Sandra Passmore from Birmingham City Council about their fantastic work trying to understand and break the barriers to Healthy Start uptake in Birmingham. \nThe aim of this event is to provide a space for individuals\, third-sector organisations\, community groups\, local authorities\, and retailers to learn from each other and think creatively about solutions that will enable Scotland to lead the way in the UK in tackling dietary health inequalities and closing the attainment gap. \nThis opportunity for innovative and cross-sector thinking comes at a crucial time; a month before the end of the Scottish Government’s consultation on Best Start Foods\, open until 28th June. \nBook your place \nBackground information\nOn 4th April 2018 the Scottish Government published their proposals for how they intend to take the newly devolved Healthy Start scheme forward. Healthy Start is a UK Government programme subsidising fruit and veg (as well as milk and formula milk) for pregnant women and families with young children who are on low-income. It is the main public scheme tackling financial barriers to healthy diets\, but uptake is low and modernisation long overdue. \nHealthy diets from the earliest age are absolutely key to the Scottish Government’s stated objectives to close the attainment gap and ensure that every child has the best possible start in life. The devolution of Healthy Start is therefore an important opportunity to improve how low-income families in Scotland are supported in the early years to access the crucial ingredients of a healthy diet\, in particular fruit and vegetables. \nThe Scottish Government is proposing a new\, modernised and simplified scheme: Best Start Foods. In the ongoing consultation they ask for feedback on their proposals\, as well as ideas for how to boost the uptake of the new scheme and for ways to support families to establish healthy eating patterns.

Obesity and overweight are linked to 13 different cancers as well as to Type 2 Diabetes\, asthma\, osteoarthritis and cardio-vascular disease. The underlying determinants of obesity and their relationship with inequalities\, as well as potential solutions\, are complex and poorly understood.
