SUMMARY:VHS Annual Conference & AGM 2020
DESCRIPTION:#WeArePublicHealth: Building Forward for Health and Wellbeing\nView the full programme here.\nOur 2020 Annual Conference and AGM take place via Zoom with 4 varied sessions over 2 days to allow flexible access for joining us. You can register for one or both days\, but we encourage you to book for both days to get the full conference experience and value. \nWith home working still the default position for many\, we’re bringing you the best of our event in a bite size format. As ever you’ll have the opportunity to listen\, share ideas and thinking\, network and discuss. Our annual conference is one of the leading health events in Scotland\, bringing together stakeholders from across the third and community sectors\, Public Health Scotland\, NHS\, national and local government\, other public bodies\, and academia. \nAs we continue to live with the COVID-19 pandemic how do we ensure that our experience and learning are what shapes the future for health and wellbeing\, the right to health\, and health inequalities? The voluntary health sector pivoted rapidly to plug the gaps and provide vital emergency responses to pressing new needs as soon as lockdown and social distancing came into force. We know our role remains pivotal now the agenda is one of remobilisation\, recovery and building back better\, and that’s an exciting but challenging agenda. \nThe Scottish Government’s Programme for Government includes a commitment to ‘continue to develop a world‑class public health service that builds on our COVID‑19 response’. As we head towards the winter and a likely second wave of  the virus\, what questions do we need to ask? Has the pandemic shifted our understanding and appreciation of public health for good? How do we empower people and communities to contribute to as well as benefit from public health? Let’s discuss what needs to happen to make public health partnership working with third sector organisations the new norm so we can ‘build forward’ together. \nOur Programme\nDay One: Wednesday 4th November\nSession One: Opening Conference Session and Keynote Addresses\n10.30am-12.30pm \nConference Chair: James Jopling\, Head of British Heart Foundation Scotland \nKeynote Address: Professor Jim McGoldrick\, Chair of Public Health Scotland \nKeynote Address: Professor Kate Ardern\, Director of Public Health\, Wigan Council \nWelcome: Claire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, VHS \nSession two: Interactive Workshops in Breakout Rooms\n1.30pm -3.00pm \nWorkshops led by: \nLindsay Paterson and Elizabeth Hurst-High  Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems Andrew Connal\, Covid-19 Modelling and Analysis Hub\, Scottish Government; Annie Macleod\, Parkinson’s UK\, Wilma Paterson\, and Alex Gallacher\, British Red Cross; Allan Johnstone\, Inverclyde Community Development Trust; Charlene Elliott\, CVS Inverclyde \nDay Two: Thursday 5th November \nSession One: Interactive Workshops in Breakout Rooms \n11am-12.30pm \nWorkshops led by: \nLindsay Paterson and Elizabeth Hurst- High\, Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems; Andrew Connal\, Covid-19 Modelling and Analysis Hub\, Scottish Government; Julie Wardrop\, CANDU (Dundee Cancer Support Network) and Tanith Muller Parkinson’s UK; Wilma Paterson and Alex Gallagher\, British Red Cross; Allan Johnstone\, Inverclyde Community Development Trust; Charlene Elliott\, CVS Inverclyde \nSession Two: Closing Addresses\, Presentation of Poster Winner and AGM\n1.30-3.30 pm \nConference Chair: James Jopling\, Head of British Heart Foundation Scotland \nKeynote Address: Professor Maggie Rae\, President\, Faculty of Public Health \nQuestions and Discussion: Hearing from third sector finalists from our poster competition \nAnnouncing the Poster Competition Winner \nVHS AGM \n\nOur Exhibitors\nWe are delighted to be joined by the following organisations- find out more and read the blogs here \n \nOur 2020 Poster Competition \nAnd our finalists are: \n\nArt in Healthcare: Room for Art- Keeping participants creative and well in their homes during Covid 19\nBreast Buddie Angus: Virtual Antenatal Education: Informing families and facilitating friendships\nCLiCK: Meeting the Needs of Women Who Sell or Exchange Sex or Images During the Coronavirus Pandemic\nMarie Curie:Past\, present and future: Caring for those approaching the end of life in Scottish Hospitals\nNational Breastfeeding Helpline: Our Response to the Pandemic\nSamaritans: Now\, more than ever\, we are here to listen\nThe Breastfeeding Network: Virtual peer support for new parents in Ayrshire\nWest Dunbartonshire Community and Voluntary Services: West Dunbartonshire Cares\n\nSee the posters\, read the blogs and vote for your winner here.

SUMMARY:Engaging with the Scottish Parliament during the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore Engaging with the Scottish Parliament during the Pandemic. How has the pandemic affected the work of the Scottish Parliament\, what is the role of the Committees and MSPs in relation to COVID-19 and what opportunities are there for voluntary health organisations to engage with them during this time? \nAn online round table chaired by Claire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, VHS and with guest speaker Paul Anderson\, Community Outreach Manager\, the Scottish Parliament. Paul will share what’s happening at the Parliament right now – both COVID19 related and non-related – and give an insight into its health related inquiries and calls for views. There will be plenty of opportunity for event participants to share any recent experience of engaging with the Parliament\, Committees and MSPs\, and to discuss how the Parliament might improve its reach and relevance during these challenging and uncertain times. \nThe Community Outreach Team (COT) works with colleagues across the Parliament to enhance opportunities for public engagement in the work of parliamentary committees. By supporting people and communities who wouldn’t otherwise engage with the Parliament\, they channel critical lived experience and insight to help MSPs and committees when they undertake parliamentary inquiries and scrutiny of legislation. To do this they work closely with key partners in communities across Scotland\, including third sector organisations like VHS. \nBook a place here. \nContact Lauren Blair if you have any questions about the event. \n

SUMMARY:Digitally Healthy: Health Literacy and Health Inequalities
DESCRIPTION:******Fully booked up****** \nNHS NES Digital Service (NDS) and VHS are partnering to run this joint event exploring health inequalities in the context of the development of digital health. The event will provide the opportunity for voluntary health organisations to engage with NDS and to explore issues and approaches regarding digital health inequalities. The event is particularly relevant in light of COVID-19 driving more health and care services online. \nNow Fully Booked but you can join the wait list here. \nAims/objectives of the event: \n\nTo explore the ways in which digital health can widen health inequalities\nTo identify good digital health literacy interventions to mitigate health inequalities\nTo agree joint actions taking forward digital health literacy interventions discussed\n\nBackground: \nScotland’s health is improving\, but the gap in health outcomes between the most and least advantaged groups in society is widening. We call this gap health inequalities. Technology has the potential to reduce health inequalities by enabling people to access digital health information and tools to help them to better manage their health and care.  However\, left unchecked\, digital technologies could also widen health inequalities. \n\nHealth inequalities are the ‘systematic differences in the health of people occupying unequal positions in society’.\nThey are strongly associated with socio-economic inequalities but can also result from discrimination.\nHealth inequalities are unfair\, not inevitable\, and must be tackled.\n\nThere is a clear and strong relationship between groups that are digitally excluded and those at greater risk of poor health.  People from excluded groups or living in deprived areas often lack the skills\, ability and means to get online.  Helping them to access and use digital health services and tools can: \n\nimprove their health literacy & help them to better manage their health and care\noffer them a better choice and convenience of service that suits their day to day lives\nimprove our relationships and how we communicate with patients\nreduce the cost and burden on frontline services\n\nWorking in collaboration \nBoth NDS and VHS have programmes of work to mitigate health inequalities. Together we recognise there is a need to engage and collaborate across sectors to help identify\, explore and address interventions which tackle health inequalities from a digital perspective. \n \nNES Digital Service (NDS) was established in 2018 to deliver the National Digital Platform\, a central part of Scotland’s Digital Health and Care Strategy. We have three objectives: \n\nto enable excellent care by making sure health and care practitioners can capture and access the specialist information they need to do their job;\nto provide tools and services which allow NHSScotland colleagues and third parties can build valuable products and services on shared national digital  infrastructure;\nto create the architecture to support key research agendas\, better decision making and service improvement.\n\nBook your place here. \nPlease contact Lauren Blair with any questions.
