They do not occur randomly or by chance. They are socially determined by circumstances largely beyond an individual’s control. These circumstances disadvantage people and limit their chance to live longer\, healthier lives.” \n  \nA FRAME IS NOT A STATE OF MIND – Artists Talk \nAn in conversation with Chris McAdam and James McLardy where they explore their process of making their collaborative film works during the two lockdowns. The first collaboration explored remoteness and the strangeness of the moment. The second key life moments and their collaborative working relationship. Both explored and questioned feelings of isolation and anxiety. DESCRIPTION:VHS are delighted that the Cross Party Group on Health Inequalities has been re-registered at the Scottish Parliament. Voluntary Health Scotland have been reappointed as the Secretariat of the Group and we welcome new co-convenors: Emma Harper MSP\, Paul O’Kane MSP and Brian Whittle MSP. \nMeeting theme: \nThis meeting will be held online using the platform ZOOM – VHS will send sign-in details by email to registered participants in advance of the meeting.  \n(If you have not yet registered\, email lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk)  \n  \nCross Party Group on Health Inequalities:   \nTopic: Responses to the inverse care law in Scotland over the last 20 years  \nThe next meeting of the group will take place on Monday the 6th December at 6pm online via Zoom and will be chaired by Paul O’Kane MSP. \nAt the meeting we will hear from: \nDr David Blane\, Clinical Research Fellow in General Practice & Primary Care\, Institute of Health & Wellbeing\, University of Glasgow \nDr David Blane will talk about the study he is leading on Responses to the inverse care law in Scotland over the last 20 years   \nThe project aims to: \n\nunderstand how the inverse care law has manifested in Scotland over the past 20 years in primary health care\nmap out the range of interventions and approaches (at national\, regional and local levels) that have been deployed to tackle the inverse care law in Scotland\, and the rationale behind them\nreview the evidence of the impact and sustainability of these interventions and approaches\, including the role of the Deep End GP project in Scotland\nsynthesise what has worked and what has not worked in reducing the inverse care law in Scotland\, and to make recommendations for future directions.\n\nPlease book your place to attend here.\nIf you have any questions please contact Lauren Blair.  \n

Scottish Government want to make sure that our social care system will consistently deliver high quality services to everyone that needs them\, throughout Scotland. Social care is an investment in our communities and our economy. We want to change the system from one that supports people to survive to one that empowers them to thrive\, with human rights at the heart of it. \nSocial care includes support for people with physical disability\, learning disabilities or mental health conditions\, older people and those with dementia\, people with or recovering from alcohol or drug addictions\, those who have been or are at risk of being homeless\, children and families who may need additional support\, or children who are unable to live with their own families. \nThe Independent Review of Adult Social Care (IRASC) recommended the creation of a National Care Service\, with Scottish Ministers being accountable for adult social care and support. However\, the Scottish Government’s ambition is to go beyond that. This consultation therefore seeks views on creating a comprehensive community health and social care service that supports people of all ages. \nThis consultation focuses on exploring the proposals for significant cultural and system change that will need to be supported by primary legislation. The Independent Review of Adult Social Care made clear that changes to systems are needed to deliver improvements in the quality of social care and support.  \nView the consultation documents here. \nAt this event we will discuss the consultation and what it means for the third sector. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join Voluntary Health Scotland at this event exploring the impact of the Covid-19 vaccine programme on health inequalities. \n*****Book your place here***** \nIn April 2021\, VHS launched its briefing report ‘Vaccine Inclusion – Reducing inequalities one Vaccine at a time’. The report seeks to explore the key barriers and enablers to accessing the COVID-19 vaccine and how the vaccine delivery model can be improved to reduce inequalities and provide holistic support to those who need it the most. The report highlights is the importance of involving third sector and community partners in the planning\, communications and delivery of public health interventions that could help prevent\, mitigate and reduce health inequalities. \nThis event will look at the key messages from the report\, exploring that our health system has a clear moral and human rights duty to those vulnerable groups who fall through the gaps of public service provision to ensure that they are not failed by this crucially important public health intervention. Some of the key demographics highlighted within the research are at very high risk if they do contract COVID-19\, including people who are homeless\, prisoners\, people living in poverty\, people who abuse drugs and alcohol\, black and ethnic minority groups\, gypsy travellers\, refugees and asylum seekers. \nIf you are a third sector organisation working actively to support people’s health and wellbeing\, you can help by attending this event to share your experience and local intelligence. These engagement events are the first step in consulting them about the establishment of a national network for Community Link Workers in Scotland. \nThe booking link on this page is for Thursday 17th June at 2pm-4pm. \nThe Scottish Government is funding a short-life project to scope and establish a national network and community of practice for Community Link Workers (CLWs) in primary care practices across Scotland. DESCRIPTION:Do you work with the Scottish Parliament or would you like to find out more about how best to engage?Join us to explore Engaging with the Scottish Parliament post election.  \nWith the Scottish election results now announced we want to look at engaging with the Scottish Parliament\, its members and processes  all while dealing with COVID-19. How has the pandemic affected the work of the Scottish Parliament\, what is the role of the Committees and MSPs\, what opportunities are there for voluntary health organisations to engage with them during this time? \nAn online round table chaired by Claire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, VHS and with guest speaker Ewan Masson\, Community Outreach Team\, the Scottish Parliament. Ewan will share what’s happening at the Parliament right now – both COVID19 related and non-related – and give an insight into its health related inquiries and calls for views. There will be plenty of opportunity for event participants to share any recent experience of engaging with the Parliament\, Committees and MSPs\, and to discuss how the Parliament might improve its reach and relevance during these challenging and uncertain times. \nThe Community Outreach Team (COT) works with colleagues across the Parliament to enhance opportunities for public engagement in the work of parliamentary committees. By supporting people and communities who wouldn’t otherwise engage with the Parliament\, they channel critical lived experience and insight to help MSPs and committees when they undertake parliamentary inquiries and scrutiny of legislation. DESCRIPTION:Join us to engage with the proposed refresh of Scotland’s Digital and Health Care Strategy and to hear more about Scottish Government plans in relation to digital and health care.  Originally jointly published by the Scottish Government\, NHS Scotland and COSLA in April 2018\, the strategy is being reviewed in light of the fast-moving environment we are all now working in\, which includes the impact of Covid-19. \nThe principles of the original strategy (empowering citizens to better manage their health and wellbeing\, and the underpinning architectural and information governance building blocks for the effective flow of information\, to enable this) will continue into the refreshed strategy.
