SUMMARY:Applying a 'Missingness Lens' to Health Inequalities-Online Event
DESCRIPTION:Join VHS on the 26th March to explore Missingness in health care and the impact on Health Inequalities. Our event will take place online on Zoom. \nWe are delighted to welcome guest speaker: \nProfessor Andrea Williamson\, Professor of General Practice and Inclusion Health at the University of Glasgow \nAt our 2024 annual conference\, Professor Williamson led a session discussing her work in to missingness and we have invited her back to explore this topic and area of work further. \nThe issue of “missingness” in healthcare is the recurring tendency for individuals not to engage with care\, resulting in further negative health impacts. Research by GPs at the Deep End Scotland has highlighted that multiple missed appointments are not just an operational cost to the NHS but a signal of deeper health inequities. Findings reveal that individuals missing more than two GP appointments annually face significantly higher premature mortality rates and often contend with multi-morbidity\, socio-economic disadvantage\, and high treatment burdens. \nThis event will look to explore the root causes of missingness. Factors range from systemic barriers—such as rigid healthcare structures and poor communication—to patients’ personal challenges\, including stigma\, trauma\, and competing life demands. Early interventions\, like assertive outreach programs in Scotland’s Deep End GP practices\, show promise in re-engaging missing patients by fostering a more adaptive and inclusive care environment. \nWhat can we do when we apply a “missingness lens” to close the health inequalities gap? The lens focuses on empathy\, flexibility\, and tangible support to meet diverse patient needs. DESCRIPTION:  \nOur next SCLWN peer support event on Tuesday 5th November from 10-11.30 will focus on trauma and vicarious trauma and will be led by Fiona Douglas from the Health Promoting Health Service at NHS  Lanarkshire.  Fiona has worked in the field of psychological trauma for over two decades\, in both public and third sector organisations. Fiona’s current role at NHS Lanarkshire’s Health Promoting Health Service team involves the co-ordination\, writing\, delivery and ongoing coaching surrounding the implementation of the Transforming Psychological Trauma national initiative. More information can be found here. \nDuring this session\, we will be looking at psychological trauma from a number of perspectives: the clients’\, our own\, and that of our colleagues. Community link workers have such a wide remit and take a holistic approach.  Psychological trauma is a common feature of the caseloads that are carried. Managers/Programme Leads for Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nThis event will take place online on Zoom. \nOur knowledge exchange events are a great opportunity for Community Link Workers to hear from and engage with organisations that can support both them and their patients. \nIn our 7th event\, you will hear from Joy Gillespie\, CEO from Survivors in Human Trafficking in Scotland (SOHTIS). SOHTIS believes everyone deserves to live in freedom with dignity and respect. Working in partnership with others\, they encourage\, enable and empower those recovered from human trafficking to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society. \nWe will also be joined by Judith Kennon\, Health Systems Engagement Manager from Diabetes Scotland. He is passionate about addressing inequalities within society and has a wealth of experience within the Third Sector leading national behaviour change programmes\, developing impact frameworks\, partnership development and strategic communications. \nWendy Sinclair- Gieben Wendy has worked in the fields of Immigration\, Prisons\, Education\, Prisoner Transport and Health and believes her role as HM Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland is the culmination of this experience. Her role is to provide confidence that Prisons are contributing in the widest sense to a safer community. \nPeter Kelly Peter joined the Poverty Alliance 2002\, becoming Director in 2004.  He is responsible for the overall day-to-day management of the organisation.  Peter represents the Alliance in a variety of forums and networks. Peter is also Company Secretary on the Board of the Alliance. \nMaree Aldam Maree is CEO of Amma Birth Companions – a Glasgow-based charity that works to improve pregnancy\, birth and parenting outcomes and experiences for people facing inequalities\, including those with insecure migration status. Maree recently co-chaired the Scottish Government’s Short Life Working Group on Racialised Inequalities in Maternity Care unity. \nDanny Boyle Danny Boyle\, serves as Senior Parliamentary and Policy Officer at BEMIS Scotland. With an LLM in Human Rights law\, he represents the organisation in various governmental and international forums\, striving to pursue racial and ethnic equality. Danny also oversees the Race\, Equality and Human Rights Network in Scotland

DESCRIPTION:VHS are hosting a Kitchen Table discussion\, online\, on the 30th July\, to discuss the Pre-budget 2025-26 scrutiny of Third sector funding principles. We have invited selected members\, challengers and critical friends to join us at the Kitchen Table. Please contact Lauren Blair if you would like to express and interest in attending. \nYour views will help to shape Voluntary Health Scotland’s response to the Social Justice and Social Security Committee’s Third Sector Funding Principles consultation\, which aims ‘to examine how the Scottish Government’s approach to fair and efficient funding can contribute to the continued effectiveness of the third sector.’ \nThe third sector is currently facing unprecedented financial pressure. Voluntary Health Scotland’s response will stress the importance of the work of the third sector and\, in particular\, its vital role in Scotland’s efforts to tackle health inequalities. To ensure that the sector is able to continue to carry out this vital role\, longer term funding certainty will be crucial. \nWe are holding a Kitchen Table discussion to help us cast a critical eye over our consultation response focusing on health\, and to benefit from the perspectives\, expertise and experience of our membership and stakeholders. DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Community Link Worker Network invites you to join us with Age Scotland at this workshop on the 12th of June online via Zoom. \nMany older people in Scotland aren’t claiming the benefits that they are entitled to\, even though the additional income could make a big difference to their daily lives. Age Scotland’s benefit workshops aim to raise awareness of the financial support that is available to older people\, with advice about how and when to apply\, and what to do if someone is unhappy with a benefit decision. \nHeather Pentler\, who is a Benefits Trainer with Age Scotland will be running Age Scotland’s ‘Unlocking your Entitlements’ workshop for community link workers from the Scottish Community Link Worker Network. The workshop aims to raise awareness of the common benefits that support older people\, including Pension Credit\, Attendance Allowance\, Carer’s Allowance\, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction. DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a Primary Care setting in Scotland. Managers/Programme Leads for these Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nThis event will take place online on Zoom. \nOur 6th Knowledge Exchange event will take place on Wednesday 24th April from 10am – 12pm. \nOur Knowledge Exchange events are a really great opportunity for Community Link Workers to hear from organisations that can support them in their work and engage in Q&A and discussion with them. \nWe are delighted to announce that we will be joined by three speakers on the day: \nAnne Garry is an Independent Living Worker from Sight Scotland Veterans which  supports veterans experiencing sight loss and those who care for them.  She will provide an overview of their services and how to refer someone to them.  \nMaureen Hunter is Engagement Officer for Scotland at The Stroke Association. Maureen will talk about the impact and effects of stroke and the support for stroke survivors and their carers.   \nRebecca Bentley works for GamCare as the Gambling Awareness and Prevention (GAP) Programme Engagement Team Lead.
