SUMMARY:VHS Consultation Event: Chronic Pain
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Government have opened a consultation looking at their Quality Prescribing for Chronic Pain guide for improvement 2026-2029. One of the areas they would like views on is non-pharmacological approaches\, including social prescribing. \nChronic pain\, defined as persistent pain lasting beyond three months\, can significantly impact quality of life\, affecting physical and mental wellbeing.  In Scotland\, the Scottish Health Survey 2022 indicates that approximately 38% of adults live with chronic pain. The prevalence of chronic pain is significantly higher in areas of socioeconomic deprivation. \nVHS is planning to respond to the consultation reflecting the views and experiences of our members and stakeholders. SUMMARY:Audit Scotland and General Practice in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Join VHS and Audit Scotland at our online event to explore the recent report which focuses on Primary Care pressures and impact for health inequalities and third sector partners. \nThe report highlights that a Scottish Government agreement with GPs to improve general practice has failed to deliver on several of its commitments. The 2018 General Medical Service (GMS) contract aimed to address the financial pressures and growing workloads facing GPs\, and to improve patients’ access to care. However\, seven years on: \n\nthe estimated number of whole-time equivalent GPs has fallen\npressure on general practice has increased\nproposals to support GP teams with more nurses\, physiotherapists and other specialists have moved more slowly than planned\nand people report finding it more difficult to access care.\n\nAudit Scotland will present on the key messages and recommendations from the general practice performance audit\, and an outline of findings relating to inequalities. SUMMARY:SCLWN- Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a primary care setting in Scotland. Managers/Programme Leads for Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nThe Scottish Community Link Worker Network is working with award-winning charity Ygam to offer CLWs City and Guilds Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training in June.  The timing of this training is particularly pertinent with the recent release of the Public Health Scotland Healthcare Needs Assessment of Gambling Harm in Scotland. This document also recommends the new NICE Guidelines on this topic\, which say the following: \n“Health and social care professionals should consider asking people about gambling (even if they have no obvious risk factors for gambling-related harm) when asking them about smoking\, alcohol consumption or use of other substances (for example\, as part of a holistic assessment or health check\, when registering for a service such as with a GP or in contacts with social services).” \nIn addition\, 83% of 8-25-year-olds game at least three times a week (with 58% gaming every single day)\, and there was a 3-fold increase in referrals for support for gaming disorder between 2019 and 2020. \nYgam’s workshop will help CLWs to open up conversations on these topics (which can be tricky to do due to the shame and stigma associated with them)\, as well as providing guidance on how to support and signpost a patient who is experiencing gaming or gambling harm. \nBook your place here.

SUMMARY:Applying a 'Missingness Lens' to Health Inequalities-Online Event
DESCRIPTION:Join VHS on the 26th March to explore Missingness in health care and the impact on Health Inequalities. Our event will take place online on Zoom. \nWe are delighted to welcome guest speaker: \nProfessor Andrea Williamson\, Professor of General Practice and Inclusion Health at the University of Glasgow \nAt our 2024 annual conference\, Professor Williamson led a session discussing her work in to missingness and we have invited her back to explore this topic and area of work further. \nThe issue of “missingness” in healthcare is the recurring tendency for individuals not to engage with care\, resulting in further negative health impacts. Research by GPs at the Deep End Scotland has highlighted that multiple missed appointments are not just an operational cost to the NHS but a signal of deeper health inequities. Findings reveal that individuals missing more than two GP appointments annually face significantly higher premature mortality rates and often contend with multi-morbidity\, socio-economic disadvantage\, and high treatment burdens. \nThis event will look to explore the root causes of missingness. Factors range from systemic barriers—such as rigid healthcare structures and poor communication—to patients’ personal challenges\, including stigma\, trauma\, and competing life demands. Early interventions\, like assertive outreach programs in Scotland’s Deep End GP practices\, show promise in re-engaging missing patients by fostering a more adaptive and inclusive care environment. \nWhat can we do when we apply a “missingness lens” to close the health inequalities gap? The lens focuses on empathy\, flexibility\, and tangible support to meet diverse patient needs. DESCRIPTION:  \nOur next SCLWN peer support event on Tuesday 5th November from 10-11.30 will focus on trauma and vicarious trauma and will be led by Fiona Douglas from the Health Promoting Health Service at NHS  Lanarkshire.  Fiona has worked in the field of psychological trauma for over two decades\, in both public and third sector organisations. Fiona’s current role at NHS Lanarkshire’s Health Promoting Health Service team involves the co-ordination\, writing\, delivery and ongoing coaching surrounding the implementation of the Transforming Psychological Trauma national initiative. More information can be found here. \nDuring this session\, we will be looking at psychological trauma from a number of perspectives: the clients’\, our own\, and that of our colleagues. Community link workers have such a wide remit and take a holistic approach.  Psychological trauma is a common feature of the caseloads that are carried.
