SUMMARY:Scottish Community Link Worker Network: Supporting CLWs’ wellbeing and resilience
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the autumn and winter\, we know that it is going to be a difficult time\, with many people struggling to cope with the increased cost of living.  While CLWs will be a vital support to many people during the coming months\, it is also important that they take care of their own resilience and mental wellbeing. \nThe Scottish Community Link Worker Network is delighted to be joined for this session by Janine Rennie\, Chief Executive of Wellbeing Scotland. Wellbeing Scotland is a voluntary organisation with services across Scotland. They provide a wide range of holistic services for individuals and families whose life experiences have impacted negatively on their wellbeing\, as well as bespoke training and consultancy to organisations. Janine will be running an introductory taster session on mental wellbeing. SUMMARY:VHS at The Gathering: Building a Healthy and Health Creating Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Voluntary Health Scotland brings together leaders from some of Scotland’s most important health charities for a timely debate on health inequalities\, the right to health and the need for more inclusive healthcare. Health inequalities are the unjust and avoidable differences in people’s health across the population and between different groups. Scotland compares poorly on health inequalities compared to most of Western Europe\, which means that the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health is not being enjoyed equally. This longstanding injustice has been brought into sharper focus by the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe root causes of health inequalities lie outside of the NHS\, but modern health care has enormous potential to prevent the onset of illness and to delay its progression. As a result\, inequitable access to effective health care can in itself be an inadvertent yet powerful driver of health inequalities. At the same time\, the good health of individuals depends on healthy communities\, a healthy society and a healthy planet. \nScotland’s health charities are at the heart of efforts to create better health for people\, especially those individuals and communities who might otherwise be marginalised\, missing or overlooked in society’s efforts to improve health outcomes.  They do this through research\, campaigning\, policy work\, education\, advocacy and direct services. Our panel will offer a rich and considered insight into what ‘building back better’ and ‘recovery’ must involve in order to seriously address Scotland’s health inequalities. \nThis event will be relevant to all third sector staff\, volunteers and board members with a direct interest in health policy and practice\, including health charities\, community health organisations\, other voluntary organisations\, TSIs\, social enterprises. \nEvent Aims: \nto explore how can communities\, third sector and public sector organisations work jointly to reduce health inequalities within local communities. \nTo examine what must change in order to support local level actions and align national policy and legislation behind them. \nto discuss how we engender macro-level change to influence the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nSpeakers: \n\nHilda Campbell\, CEO\, COPE Scotland\nBushra Riaz\, Policy Officer\, Kidney Research UK\nAlastair Hudson\, CEO\, HIV Scotland\nJohn Watson\, Associate Director Scotland\, Stroke Association\n\nEvent will be chaired by Claire Stevens\, CEO\,  Voluntary Health Scotland \nBookings will be open soon on via the Gathering website. DESCRIPTION:Join VHS and the Scottish Government to discuss a Health and Social Care Strategy for Older People. \nFollowing the Scottish Government’s Statement of Intent published in March 2021\, they have engaged with a wide range of older people to get their views\non their health and social care services\, how these have been affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic and how these services could improve\, to better meet the needs of our ageing population. The importance of health and social care of older people has never been more urgent – with a quarter of Scotland’s population projected to be aged 65 years and over by mid-2043\, and the impact that the pandemic has had on older people. This has brought to light the inequalities that many older people face in being able to access a wide range of support services\, allowing them to maintain their health and wellbeing and help prevent social isolation and frailty\, which can then lead to falls and ill health. \nView the consultation documents here. \nAt this event we will discuss the consultation and what it means for the third sector. DESCRIPTION:In December VHS hosted a workshop in partnership with Evaluation Support Scotland: Demonstrating impact on health inequalities for Community Link Workers.  We hope attendees found it useful and have started to think how you could use some of the approaches/tools in your role. \nWe plan to run a follow up peer learning session on this topic on Tuesday 29th March 10.00 – 12.00.   This will be held on Zoom. \nThis is an opportunity for you to share learning and successes as well as to get a bit of peer support with any ongoing challenges in evaluating your impact on health inequalities. \nWhat’s in it for you? \n\nShare your evaluation successes in this area. What approaches/tools have you tried since the training in December? We are holding a series of Kitchen Table discussions to help us cast a critical eye on ourselves as an organisation\, and to benefit from the perspectives\, expertise and experience of people with professional or personal knowledge of the issues. \nWe have identified six particular challenge for VHS: \n\nHow can we make sure that diversity is better reflected in and through our governance and leadership?\nDo we have the necessary policies to promote the principles and legal requirements of equality\, diversity and fairness?\nHow do we strengthen our practice of equality\, diversity and fairness in our recruitment\, selection\, training and development of staff?\nHow do we strengthen our membership base to include more voluntary health organisations working in the areas of equality\, diversity and inclusion?\nHow can we strengthen the delivery of our policy and engagement work – actively identifying and reducing discrimination\, and respecting diversity and cultural differences?\nWhat more can we do to promote the equality\, diversity and inclusion through our external communications?\n\nListening to\, learning from and collaborating with our stakeholders is crucial.  Our approach needs to be focused on improving VHS’s own work but we hope that the Kitchen Table discussions will also help contribute to improvement\, delivery and learning across our stakeholders\, including member organisations\, healthcare providers and health policy makers. \nRead more: VHS improving equality diversity and inclusion briefing paper \nPlease email Lauren Blair to express interest in attending on 22nd March. \nOur second Kitchen Table takes place online on 6th April\, and is now fully booked. \n

SUMMARY:Ageing well with The Open University: A knowledge exchange
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of 2020 and in January 2021\, VHS ran a series of events on ageing well with the Open University. \nLed by Dr Jitka Vsecteckova\, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Social Care with the Open University\, with discussion and input from third sector staff\, volunteers and older people themselves\, these talks centred on gaining an understanding of the 5 Pillars of Ageing and considered their implications for older people’s health and wellbeing. The five pillars are: nutrition\, hydration\, physical activity\, cognitive stimulation and social stimulation. \nThis event will pick up the discussion over a year since our last meeting. DESCRIPTION:The recently published digital health and care strategy commits to the development of Scotland’s first ever dedicated Data Strategy. It’s important that people are at the heart of any developments and that trust is built in how our data is stored and used.  \nThe working vision of the Strategy is to ensure health and care data supports the delivery of health and social care services\, and to ensure it does so in a way that empowers the citizens and supports innovation and research. Citizens should have access to and control over\, their own health and care data – including the ability to view and update information contained. \nThe strategy will also outline how health and care services can be better integrated and built on people-centred approaches where staff can record\, access and share relevant data across the health and social care system to support people’s care. The third and independent sector health and care providers are at the heart of this work\, recognising the importance of data flow for the integration agenda.” \nThe government has established a Data Strategy Working Group as part of this refresh. SUMMARY:National Planning Framework (NPF4) consultation with Scottish Parliament
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 7th February the Scottish Parliament is holding an engagement event on the draft National Planning Framework (NPF4) consultation. VHS are hosting a break-out session we’d like to invite members to take part in. The Parliament will confirm the start and running times early in January\, but meantime we are seeking expressions of interest from voluntary health organisations interested in participating. \nThe draft National Planning Framework (NPF4) which sets out the long-term plan for what Scotland could be in 2045 was laid before Parliament in November. The Scottish Government is consulting on the draft framework until 31 March 2022. \nThe Parliament is organising an online engagement event to discuss the NPF4 with multiple subject-focused break-out rooms. As part of this Voluntary Health Scotland will be co-facilitating a break-out room focused on creating healthier places. The break-out room will be a facilitated conversation about how the proposals in the framework could impact health and wellbeing. We would be keen to hear from members with an interest in NPF4 who are eager to participate in this discussion. We hope this will inform parliamentarians’ engagement with the NPF4 and wider consultation responses. \nNPF4: Policy 14 in the draft National Planning Framework is focused on health and wellbeing. It contains policies on: \n\nLocal development plans creating healthier spaces and tackling health inequalities\nEnsuring health and social care facilities and infrastructure meet the needs of the community\nNot supporting development proposals which are likely to have significant adverse health effects\nRequiring a health impact assessment for some proposed developments\nAvoiding development proposals which could have a significant adverse effect on air quality or noise\nand supporting proposals for community food growing.\n\nWhile we are eager to keep the focus of the conversation on health and wellbeing\, we appreciate other elements of the framework will likely impact this such as 20-minute neighbourhoods and proposals on human rights. With that in mind we are keen to explore how these wider policies could impact people’s health and wellbeing too. \nNumbers are limited so please express and interest and we will confirm if you have secured a place as soon as possible. DESCRIPTION:VHS are delighted that the Cross Party Group on Health Inequalities has been re-registered at the Scottish Parliament. Scottish Government want to make sure that our social care system will consistently deliver high quality services to everyone that needs them\, throughout Scotland. Social care is an investment in our communities and our economy. We want to change the system from one that supports people to survive to one that empowers them to thrive\, with human rights at the heart of it. \nSocial care includes support for people with physical disability\, learning disabilities or mental health conditions\, older people and those with dementia\, people with or recovering from alcohol or drug addictions\, those who have been or are at risk of being homeless\, children and families who may need additional support\, or children who are unable to live with their own families. \nThe Independent Review of Adult Social Care (IRASC) recommended the creation of a National Care Service\, with Scottish Ministers being accountable for adult social care and support. However\, the Scottish Government’s ambition is to go beyond that. This consultation therefore seeks views on creating a comprehensive community health and social care service that supports people of all ages. \nThis consultation focuses on exploring the proposals for significant cultural and system change that will need to be supported by primary legislation. The Independent Review of Adult Social Care made clear that changes to systems are needed to deliver improvements in the quality of social care and support.  \nView the consultation documents here. \nAt this event we will discuss the consultation and what it means for the third sector.
