SUMMARY:Understanding barriers to accessing primary care- a third sector response
DESCRIPTION:We invite third sector organisations to join us at our next online Members Meet Up\, where we want to hear your views on the barriers people face when accessing primary care\, especially people affected by socio-economic inequalities. In your experience\, what are the barriers to primary care\, and how are they widening the health inequalities gap? We are holding this Members Meet Up in order to contribute a strong voluntary health perspective to the work of the Primary Care Health Inequalities Development Group. \nBook a place here.\nMost of the time\, people use their own personal and community assets to manage their health and wellbeing and achieve the outcomes that matter to them. But primary care is their first point of contact with the NHS. This includes contact with community based services provided by general practitioners (GPs)\, community nurses\, dentists\, dental nurses\, optometrists\, dispensing opticians\, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. It can also be with allied health professionals such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists\, midwives and pharmacists. \nTo what extent are barriers to primary care contributing to excess deaths and premature disability related to socio-economic inequalities? This is the question posed in the Report of the Primary Care Short Life Working Group in 2022. The report called for further investigation into the barriers some groups experience in accessing primary care\, which it said may manifest themselves through waiting times; delayed presentations with serious conditions; “missingness” from health care; perverse incentives and behaviours created by targets; and health-damaging behaviours people adopt to self-manage or self-medicate when unable to access care and support. To this list VHS would add\, stigma and discrimination. \nVHS was part of the Primary Care Short Life Working Group\, and sits on the Development Group that is taking forward its recommendations. \nWe need your views\, so please join us for this important discussion. \nBook a place here.\nPlease contact Lauren Blair if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Human Rights Bill- Kitchen Table Discussion
DESCRIPTION:VHS are hosting a Kitchen Table discussion\, in person\, at our office in Edinburgh\, on the morning of Tuesday 5th September\, to discuss the Scottish Government Human Rights Bill Consultation. We have invited selected members\, challengers and critical friends to join us at the Kitchen Table. Please contact Lauren Blair if you would like to express and interest in attending. \nThe Scottish Government has launched the consultation gathering views to help inform the  Human Rights Bill. The Bill will incorporate a range of economic\, social and cultural rights into Scots law for the first time. One of the rights listed is ‘The right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health”\, this will be the primary focus of our consultation response. However\, we are also interested in hearing our members’ views on incorporating the convention on the elimination of racial discrimination\, the elimination of discrimination against women and the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities\, not to mention plans to recognise the right to a healthy environment. So many of our rights are intertwined and impact our health and wellbeing\, we want to hear what they mean to our members and their work. \nWe are holding a Kitchen Table discussion to help us cast a critical eye over our consultation response focusing on health\, and to benefit from the perspectives\, expertise and experience of people with professional or personal knowledge of the issues. The main body of the meeting will be concentrating on the consultation questions. We especially want to hear from any members who have imbedded a human rights based approach to their work supporting people’s health and wellbeing. \nListening to\, learning from and collaborating with our stakeholders is crucial to enable VHS to put forward important views on the right to health and the role of human rights in tackling health inequalities as part of our consultation response. \nPlease contact Lauren Blair with any further questions. \n  \n

This is one of the biggest steps forward in human rights in Scotland\, because the Bill will embed major international human rights treaties and the right to a healthy environment into Scots law. \nThis could make it so much easier for people to name and claim all their rights\, and drive a shift towards human rights-based decision making – if it is done right. \nWe want as many civil society organisations as possible to make their voices heard in the consultation process. Come along to this session to learn more about why the consultation matters\, how it relates to your work\, and how you might want to respond. SUMMARY:VHS Members Meet Up: National Outcomes Review
DESCRIPTION:Join us online on Zoom at our next VHS members meet up. \nThe Scottish Government is reviewing its National Outcomes\, which cover issues from protecting our environment\, to being healthy and active; with communities that are inclusive\, empowered\, resilient and safe\, to tackling poverty by sharing opportunities\, wealth and power more equally. The National Outcomes are part of the National Performance Framework which measures progress on these key areas and identifies areas which require investment. The consultation closes on Monday 5th of June. \nTo inform our response to the consultation we are facilitating a members’ meeting to discuss the National Outcomes on Wednesday 10th May where we will be joined by the Scottish Government’s National Performance Framework Unit. \nWe would like to hear our members views on the current National Outcomes\, your experience using the National Outcomes\, and whether you believe there should be additional National Outcomes or more added to the current outcomes. \nWe will hear from: \n\nMeeting Chair: Christine Carlin\, Assistant Director\, Network Engagement and Director in Scotland\, Home-Start UK \nKimberley Somerside\, Policy and Engagement Lead\, Voluntary Health Scotland\nLesley Thomson\, Engagement Lead\, National Performance Framework Unit\, Scottish Government\n\n  \nHealth and the National Outcomes \nMany of the National Outcomes are linked to our health and wellbeing\, such as the outcomes on tackling poverty\, protecting human rights or living in inclusive\, empowered and resilient communities. DESCRIPTION:Public Health Scotland Event with Voluntary Health Scotland \nCommunity advocacy is a preventative and pro-active approach that supports people to be active citizens and self-advocate in relation to decisions affecting their lives. DESCRIPTION:In November 2022\, VHS published Broader Reach and Stronger Voice: Reflecting on the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. This was a qualitative study asking our member organisations and wider network about the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. \nAt our event on the 26th of January\, we will be bringing VHS members and partners together to discuss the potential and opportunities in partnership working for health. \nBook your place here.\nThe clear overwhelming message from the third sector is that we want to be more involved in future public health interventions to reduce inequalities. The COVID-19 vaccine programme has provided us with multiple positive examples of how partnership working can benefit communities and individuals. \nThird sector and voluntary organisations are trusted by the communities we serve and are therefore well placed to support future public health interventions. The sector is already working with communities who are often underserved and falling through the cracks of services. SUMMARY:Arts Culture Health Wellbeing + Climate
DESCRIPTION:This is an Arts Culture Health and Wellbeing Scotland Event with support from VHS. \nMany health crises are also environment crises. Obesity and diabetes are directly related to industrial processed food and monocultural farming. Poor mental health is related to individualism and consumerism. Health is bound up in the various Government Climate Change strategies including e.g. diet\, where action on climate is also action on human health. Another key area is greenspace where human health benefits align with climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. \nACHWS next event focuses on the relationship between arts & culture\, health & wellbeing\, and the climate crisis. We will scope out multiple connections with the help of three presentations: \n\nPresentation by Ben Twist\, Director\, Creative Carbon Scotland and Lauren Duffy\, artist\, RIG Arts on the Clyde Rebuilt project which focused on climate change adaptation and in particularly urban heat. RIG Arts\, one of three arts organisations involved in this Glasgow City Region EU funded adaptation project\, highlighted the health and social dimensions\, enabling local engagement with the issues through activities including creating zines;\nMartin Johnston\, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde’s Head of Sustainability and Jackie Sands Public Health Improvement Senior: Arts and Health will discuss the #netcarbonzero challenge from an NHS Board perspective (buildings\, energy\, food\, transport\, travel\, waste\, greenspace);\nVictoria Hume of the Culture\, Health and Wellbeing Alliance will present on their Climate Award – why they introduced it and what sorts of things it has highlighted.\n\nWith lots of opportunities for discussion the event will open up the issues and show how the arts and culture have a key role to play. \nParticipants in the event will gain: \n\nAn overview of the challenges for the health sector\, in this case NHS Boards\nExamples of asset led arts projects which demonstrate collaboration with both health and environment professionals/expertise\nNew contacts in arts\, health and environment and a better understanding of collaborative approaches\n\nACHWS will get a better understanding of what future policy and research might be relevant and test the relevance of some form of special interest group to provide advice and examples to the membership. \nBook a place here.

SUMMARY:Scottish Community Link Worker Network: Supporting CLWs’ wellbeing and resilience
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the autumn and winter\, we know that it is going to be a difficult time\, with many people struggling to cope with the increased cost of living.  While CLWs will be a vital support to many people during the coming months\, it is also important that they take care of their own resilience and mental wellbeing. \nThe Scottish Community Link Worker Network is delighted to be joined for this session by Janine Rennie\, Chief Executive of Wellbeing Scotland. Wellbeing Scotland is a voluntary organisation with services across Scotland. They provide a wide range of holistic services for individuals and families whose life experiences have impacted negatively on their wellbeing\, as well as bespoke training and consultancy to organisations. Janine will be running an introductory taster session on mental wellbeing. SUMMARY:VHS at The Gathering: Building a Healthy and Health Creating Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Voluntary Health Scotland brings together leaders from some of Scotland’s most important health charities for a timely debate on health inequalities\, the right to health and the need for more inclusive healthcare. Health inequalities are the unjust and avoidable differences in people’s health across the population and between different groups. Scotland compares poorly on health inequalities compared to most of Western Europe\, which means that the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health is not being enjoyed equally. This longstanding injustice has been brought into sharper focus by the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe root causes of health inequalities lie outside of the NHS\, but modern health care has enormous potential to prevent the onset of illness and to delay its progression. As a result\, inequitable access to effective health care can in itself be an inadvertent yet powerful driver of health inequalities. At the same time\, the good health of individuals depends on healthy communities\, a healthy society and a healthy planet. \nScotland’s health charities are at the heart of efforts to create better health for people\, especially those individuals and communities who might otherwise be marginalised\, missing or overlooked in society’s efforts to improve health outcomes.  They do this through research\, campaigning\, policy work\, education\, advocacy and direct services. Our panel will offer a rich and considered insight into what ‘building back better’ and ‘recovery’ must involve in order to seriously address Scotland’s health inequalities. \nThis event will be relevant to all third sector staff\, volunteers and board members with a direct interest in health policy and practice\, including health charities\, community health organisations\, other voluntary organisations\, TSIs\, social enterprises. \nEvent Aims: \nto explore how can communities\, third sector and public sector organisations work jointly to reduce health inequalities within local communities. \nTo examine what must change in order to support local level actions and align national policy and legislation behind them. \nto discuss how we engender macro-level change to influence the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nSpeakers: \n\nHilda Campbell\, CEO\, COPE Scotland\nBushra Riaz\, Policy Officer\, Kidney Research UK\nAlastair Hudson\, CEO\, HIV Scotland\nJohn Watson\, Associate Director Scotland\, Stroke Association\n\nEvent will be chaired by Claire Stevens\, CEO\,  Voluntary Health Scotland \nBookings will be open soon on via the Gathering website.
