DESCRIPTION:Voluntary Health Scotland are exhibiting at this event. \nCaring for our older people in Scotland is a complex task. The number of older people is on the rise with people living longer with a multitude of health and care needs. There is an immediate importance of addressing this\, evident through a range of policies from the Scottish Government that look at our rising care needs. The last few years has seen major changes unfold through the Public Bodies Act 2014. The new legislation aims to deliver an integrated yet flexible care system especially important to many older people who do have a range of care needs and health issues. \nCurrently there is a review of the national care standards. The human rights of each person need to be embedded strongly in all care approaches. Receiving proper care and being treated with dignity is the backbone that is essential to all older people in Scotland. \nCare provisions and the needs of Scotland’s older people need to be met\, but we also need to have greater equality across Scotland. Although life expectancy is rising\, those living in poorer areas of Scotland can have life expectancy cut by over 10 years. The preventative approach to health for older people must be addressed alongside the immediate care needs to ensure future delivery is not an impossible task. \nWe hope to bring together a range of delegates from the care profession who have a role in older people care in Scotland. SUMMARY:The Wellbeing Alliance: Tackling Public Health Prevention from the Inside out
DESCRIPTION:Health problems and GP consultations involving mental health issues are more than twice as prevalent in deprived areas as affluent areas\, and are the commonest \nco morbidity. Depression is recorded in 1:6 patients with chronic conditions in Scotland. How can people in low states of mind hear public health messages and are they likely to act upon them and how can we collectively improve the take up of public health messages in society\, thus improving the wellbeing and resilience of our citizens? \nRelatively new to the UK\, innate health or progressive wellbeing model has been utilized to great effect in the USA over the last 35 years\, in fields as diverse as business efficacy\, stress management\, criminal justice\, marriage counselling and education. The progressive wellbeing model has been applied in a variety of challenging settings. An early project\, which garnered national publicity under the leadership of Dr Roger Mills\, introduced innate Health to residents of a pair of low-income housing developments in Miami known as Modello and Homestead Gardens. After three years\, there were major documented reductions in crime\, drug dealing\, teenage pregnancy\, child abuse\, child neglect\, unemployment and families on benefits. \nOne of our Panel \,Dr Jack Pransky has chronicled the transformation that unfolded there\, in his book Modello\, A Story of Hope for the Inner City and Beyond. Later projects in some of the most severely violence-ridden housing developments in New York\, Minnesota\, and California and in other communities in California\, Hawaii\, and Colorado built upon the early experience in the Modello/Homestead work. The Coliseum Gardens housing complex in Oakland\, California\, for example\, had previously had the fourth highest murder rate of such a complex in the US\, but after Innate health classes were launched\, the homicide rate began to decline.  The Progressive Wellbeing model has also found application in police departments\, prisons\, mental health clinics\, community health clinics\, nursing and drug rehabilitation programs. \nThe Wellbeing Alliance with their Alliance Partners are raising the profile of the benefits of progressive wellbeing to encourage discussion\, debate and a move towards utilizing this understanding to improve the health and wellbeing of Scotland’s citizens via their Centre for Progressive Wellbeing . \nEmail : Jacquie@thewellbeingalliance.com to confirm your place.

The progressive wellbeing model has been applied in a variety of challenging settings. An early project\, which garnered national publicity under the leadership of Dr Roger Mills\, introduced innate Health to residents of a pair of low-income housing developments in Miami known as Modello and Homestead Gardens. After three years\, there were major documented reductions in crime\, drug dealing\, teenage pregnancy\, child abuse\, child neglect\, unemployment and families on benefits. \nOne of our Panel \,Dr Jack Pransky has chronicled the transformation that unfolded there\, in his book Modello\, A Story of Hope for the Inner City and Beyond. Later projects in some of the most severely violence-ridden housing developments in New York\, Minnesota\, and California and in other communities in California\, Hawaii\, and Colorado built upon the early experience in the Modello/Homestead work. The Coliseum Gardens housing complex in Oakland\, California\, for example\, had previously had the fourth highest murder rate of such a complex in the US\, but after Innate health classes were launched\, the homicide rate began to decline.  The Progressive Wellbeing model has also found application in police departments\, prisons\, mental health clinics\, community health clinics\, nursing and drug rehabilitation programs. \nThe Wellbeing Alliance with their Alliance Partners are raising the profile of the benefits of progressive wellbeing to encourage discussion\, debate and a move towards utilizing this understanding to improve the health and wellbeing of Scotland’s citizens via their Centre for Progressive Wellbeing . \nEmail : Jacquie@thewellbeingalliance.com to confirm your place.

SUMMARY:Public Health Review Third Sector Sounding Board
DESCRIPTION:A review of public health is currently underway in Scotland. Called for by Scottish Ministers in November last year\, the review is being carried out by an expert review group\, which includes Voluntary Health Scotland. The review group\, chaired by Dr Hamish Wilson\, met in December 2014 and will meet monthly\, aiming to report to Ministers in summer of this year. \nCurrently the group is developing its engagement with stakeholders and VHS is holding a Sounding Board meeting to give an opportunity to third sector colleagues to contribute their thoughts and experiences to the debate. We are inviting a targeted list of organisations and individuals in order to ensure that discussion is rooted in experience and understanding of public health from a third sector perspective. \nThe sounding board will be facilitated by Audrey Birt (former Chair of the Health & Social Care Alliance) and we will be joined by Heather Cowan\, the policy lead at the Scottish Government for the public health review and by Grant Sugden\, CEO\, of Waverley Care\, who is the voluntary sector (VHS) representative on the review group. \nThis is a great opportunity to ensure that the activities and experiences of third sector organisations are recognised in the review and that the review group takes an informed cross-sectoral perspective in its work. \nFor more information on this meeting\, please contact Lauren Blair  or call 0131 474 6189.
