SUMMARY:VHS Members Meet Up: National Outcomes Review
DESCRIPTION:Join us online on Zoom at our next VHS members meet up. \nThe Scottish Government is reviewing its National Outcomes\, which cover issues from protecting our environment\, to being healthy and active; with communities that are inclusive\, empowered\, resilient and safe\, to tackling poverty by sharing opportunities\, wealth and power more equally. The National Outcomes are part of the National Performance Framework which measures progress on these key areas and identifies areas which require investment. The consultation closes on Monday 5th of June. \nTo inform our response to the consultation we are facilitating a members’ meeting to discuss the National Outcomes on Wednesday 10th May where we will be joined by the Scottish Government’s National Performance Framework Unit. \nWe would like to hear our members views on the current National Outcomes\, your experience using the National Outcomes\, and whether you believe there should be additional National Outcomes or more added to the current outcomes. \nWe will hear from: \n\nMeeting Chair: Christine Carlin\, Assistant Director\, Network Engagement and Director in Scotland\, Home-Start UK \nKimberley Somerside\, Policy and Engagement Lead\, Voluntary Health Scotland\nLesley Thomson\, Engagement Lead\, National Performance Framework Unit\, Scottish Government\n\n  \nHealth and the National Outcomes \nMany of the National Outcomes are linked to our health and wellbeing\, such as the outcomes on tackling poverty\, protecting human rights or living in inclusive\, empowered and resilient communities. DESCRIPTION:In November 2022\, VHS published Broader Reach and Stronger Voice: Reflecting on the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. This was a qualitative study asking our member organisations and wider network about the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. \nAt our event on the 26th of January\, we will be bringing VHS members and partners together to discuss the potential and opportunities in partnership working for health. \nBook your place here.\nThe clear overwhelming message from the third sector is that we want to be more involved in future public health interventions to reduce inequalities. The COVID-19 vaccine programme has provided us with multiple positive examples of how partnership working can benefit communities and individuals. \nThird sector and voluntary organisations are trusted by the communities we serve and are therefore well placed to support future public health interventions. The sector is already working with communities who are often underserved and falling through the cracks of services. SUMMARY:Arts Culture Health Wellbeing + Climate
DESCRIPTION:This is an Arts Culture Health and Wellbeing Scotland Event with support from VHS. \nMany health crises are also environment crises. Obesity and diabetes are directly related to industrial processed food and monocultural farming. Poor mental health is related to individualism and consumerism. Health is bound up in the various Government Climate Change strategies including e.g. diet\, where action on climate is also action on human health. Another key area is greenspace where human health benefits align with climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. \nACHWS next event focuses on the relationship between arts & culture\, health & wellbeing\, and the climate crisis. We will scope out multiple connections with the help of three presentations: \n\nPresentation by Ben Twist\, Director\, Creative Carbon Scotland and Lauren Duffy\, artist\, RIG Arts on the Clyde Rebuilt project which focused on climate change adaptation and in particularly urban heat. RIG Arts\, one of three arts organisations involved in this Glasgow City Region EU funded adaptation project\, highlighted the health and social dimensions\, enabling local engagement with the issues through activities including creating zines;\nMartin Johnston\, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde’s Head of Sustainability and Jackie Sands Public Health Improvement Senior: Arts and Health will discuss the #netcarbonzero challenge from an NHS Board perspective (buildings\, energy\, food\, transport\, travel\, waste\, greenspace);\nVictoria Hume of the Culture\, Health and Wellbeing Alliance will present on their Climate Award – why they introduced it and what sorts of things it has highlighted.\n\nWith lots of opportunities for discussion the event will open up the issues and show how the arts and culture have a key role to play. \nParticipants in the event will gain: \n\nAn overview of the challenges for the health sector\, in this case NHS Boards\nExamples of asset led arts projects which demonstrate collaboration with both health and environment professionals/expertise\nNew contacts in arts\, health and environment and a better understanding of collaborative approaches\n\nACHWS will get a better understanding of what future policy and research might be relevant and test the relevance of some form of special interest group to provide advice and examples to the membership. \nBook a place here.

DESCRIPTION:As we approach the autumn and winter\, we know that it is going to be a difficult time\, with many people struggling to cope with the increased cost of living.  While CLWs will be a vital support to many people during the coming months\, it is also important that they take care of their own resilience and mental wellbeing. \nThe Scottish Community Link Worker Network is delighted to be joined for this session by Janine Rennie\, Chief Executive of Wellbeing Scotland. Wellbeing Scotland is a voluntary organisation with services across Scotland. They provide a wide range of holistic services for individuals and families whose life experiences have impacted negatively on their wellbeing\, as well as bespoke training and consultancy to organisations. Janine will be running an introductory taster session on mental wellbeing. SUMMARY:VHS at The Gathering: Building a Healthy and Health Creating Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Voluntary Health Scotland brings together leaders from some of Scotland’s most important health charities for a timely debate on health inequalities\, the right to health and the need for more inclusive healthcare. Health inequalities are the unjust and avoidable differences in people’s health across the population and between different groups. Scotland compares poorly on health inequalities compared to most of Western Europe\, which means that the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health is not being enjoyed equally. This longstanding injustice has been brought into sharper focus by the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe root causes of health inequalities lie outside of the NHS\, but modern health care has enormous potential to prevent the onset of illness and to delay its progression. As a result\, inequitable access to effective health care can in itself be an inadvertent yet powerful driver of health inequalities. At the same time\, the good health of individuals depends on healthy communities\, a healthy society and a healthy planet. \nScotland’s health charities are at the heart of efforts to create better health for people\, especially those individuals and communities who might otherwise be marginalised\, missing or overlooked in society’s efforts to improve health outcomes.  They do this through research\, campaigning\, policy work\, education\, advocacy and direct services. SUMMARY:Community Link Workers – Demonstrating Impact on Health Inequalities
DESCRIPTION:*This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a Primary Care setting in Scotland and who would be interested in understanding how to demonstrate their impact on tackling health inequalities. Managers/Programme Leads for these Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nFollowing on from our successful workshop for Community Link workers in 2021\, Evaluation Support Scotland (ESS) and Voluntary Health Scotland (VHS) are holding a second joint learning workshop to help Community Link Workers explain and measure their work by drawing on the ESS resource Recognising our rich tapestry. \nThis session may appeal to you if you are keen to review how you currently evaluate your work. Perhaps you are wondering: \n“How can I show that my work has stopped someone going into crisis?” \n“Counting the number of people we help doesn’t show the full picture of our impact. DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Parliament’s Health\, Social Care & Sport Committee is holding an inquiry into what can be done about health inequalities. The Parliament’s Community & Participation Team are hosting four informal engagement events as part of their scrutiny of the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nThis online engagement event will focus on equalities and human rights. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nSocial injustice can create conditions that can negatively affect the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. \n\nSome individuals and groups\, most often those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged\, have poorer health outcomes than others.\nThese individuals and groups can experience barriers accessing health and care\, these can be physical\, financial\, mental or social related to stigma/discrimination.\nHuman rights violations can contribute to and exacerbate poor health.\n\nIn the context of equalities and human rights we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nIncome and employment status are strongly associated with health and wellbeing. \n\n\n\nPoor health can limit access to employment.\nUnemployment and job insecurity can lead to poor health and wellbeing.\nLow incomes can prevent people from participating in social life and day to day activities.\nFood poverty and insecurity can lead to poor health.\nIncome can be related to life expectancy\, with those on higher salaries expected to live longer.\nMany physical and mental health outcomes improve as income rises.\n\n\n\nIn the context of economy and employment we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Parliament’s Health\, Social Care & Sport Committee is holding an inquiry into what can be done about health inequalities. The Parliament’s Community & Participation Team are hosting four informal engagement events as part of their scrutiny of the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nThis online engagement event will focus on local government\, housing and planning. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nCommunity life\, social connections and having a voice in local decisions can affect health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. \n\nAccess to housing\, local amenities and how local environments are planned and laid out can all have an impact on an individual’s health.\nLiving in poor housing – a cold\, damp home – can lead to poor physical health and respiratory problems.\nHigh housing costs and increasing bills may place a strain on people’s finances\, forcing individuals to make a choice between heating and good quality food.\nPoor town planning can limit an individual’s access to community assets and services\, especially those with ill health.\nPoor health can impact on educational outcomes\, and education has an impact on our health outcomes.\nAccess to social care can make a difference to health and wellbeing\, including helping individuals participate in society and improving mental health\, enabling rehabilitation and improving community connections.\n\nIn the context of local government\, housing and planning we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Parliament’s Health\, Social Care & Sport Committee is holding an inquiry into what can be done about health inequalities. The Parliament’s Community & Participation Team are hosting four informal engagement events as part of their scrutiny of the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nThis online engagement event will focus on social justice and social security. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nChanges in social security policies can have significant effects on health and wellbeing. \n\nAusterity\, cuts to benefits and tax credits can have an impact on health and wellbeing\, and life expectancy\, this can often have the worst impact in the most deprived areas.\nImprovements in social security benefits can improve mental health outcomes and reductions can have a negative impact on mental health outcomes.\nSome groups and individuals do not have the capacity to engage appropriately or have someone that can advocate for them on the circumstances and decisions that can affect them\, or to appeal decisions they feel are unfair. This can impact on health and wellbeing.\n\nIn the context of social justice and social security we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. SUMMARY:Health and social care strategy for older people consultation event
DESCRIPTION:Join VHS and the Scottish Government to discuss a Health and Social Care Strategy for Older People. \nFollowing the Scottish Government’s Statement of Intent published in March 2021\, they have engaged with a wide range of older people to get their views\non their health and social care services\, how these have been affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic and how these services could improve\, to better meet the needs of our ageing population. The importance of health and social care of older people has never been more urgent – with a quarter of Scotland’s population projected to be aged 65 years and over by mid-2043\, and the impact that the pandemic has had on older people. This has brought to light the inequalities that many older people face in being able to access a wide range of support services\, allowing them to maintain their health and wellbeing and help prevent social isolation and frailty\, which can then lead to falls and ill health. \nView the consultation documents here. \nAt this event we will discuss the consultation and what it means for the third sector. SUMMARY:Cross Party Group Joint Meeting: Mental Health and Health Inequalities
