DESCRIPTION:With Health promising to be one of the key battlegrounds ahead of May’s Scottish Parliament elections\, British Heart Foundation Scotland would like to invite you to attend a series of open interviews Holyrood magazine will be hosting with the health leads for the SNP\, Scottish Labour and Scottish Conservatives. \nAhead of the publication of our Health Manifesto Special Issue\, Mandy Rhodes Managing Director of Holyrood Magazine will be interviewing Shona Robison MSP\, (Cabinet Secretary for Health\, Wellbeing & Sport\, Scottish Government and SNP)\, Jackson Carlaw MSP (Deputy Leader and Health Spokesperson\, Scottish Conservatives) and Jenny Marra MSP (Spokesperson for Equality\, Scottish Labour). \nThe events will last for approximately ninety minutes\, with refreshments available from 8:30am and the interviews starting at 9:00am. There will be the chance to open up the interviews to questions from the floor\, and attendees will be invited to submit questions on arrival. SUMMARY:Tackling inequality through breaking the link between smoking and poverty
DESCRIPTION:What can be done to help reduce the burden of tobacco on our low income communities? \n The Scottish Tobacco-free Alliance (STA) invites you to an afternoon seminar on Monday 29th of February in order to examine this important sticking point to delivering reduced health inequality. \nAs you will know\, smoking rates in the most deprived communities are four times higher than in the richest. Almost half of adults who are permanently sick or disabled\, or who are unemployed and seeking work\, smoke tobacco. Smoking rates are particularly high amongst people with mental health issues\, the prison population and children in care. \nCrucially\, in every one of these groups most of those who smoke say that they want to stop. So the health\, social and economic inequality caused by smoking is not about lifestyle choice but about people affected by social and economic factors which push some groups to smoke and make it more difficult for them to act on their desire to stop. \nProfessor Amanda Amos from University of Edinburgh Centre for Population Health Sciences has agreed to give an overview of the factors which lead to higher smoking levels in low-income households and the inequality this causes\, and Frances Thirlway from University of Durham will give an insight into the part played by tobacco in low income communities and the extent to which current health messaging has influenced behaviour change amongst individuals experiencing poverty.  \nThe seminar will then be open for discussion as to how best to encourage and support quitting in low income communities served by community owned assets\, foodbanks and agencies tasked with making life better through self-improvement and self-advocacy. \nIf you have pondered the dilemma of how to support people out of poverty without putting vital trust or progress at risk\, you will find this seminar of real interest and can help build the consensus needed to really get to grips with this major contributor to health inequality and community impoverishment. \nPlease consider attending or engaging a colleague to attend on behalf of your organisation. \nTo register please email Clair Kirkwood: ckirkwood@ashscotland.org.uk \nFor more information click here.   \n

Audit Scotland is keen to strengthen its engagement with the third sector as an important stakeholder in health and social care\, and VHS is coordinating this workshop on behalf of the Third Sector Health and Social Care Advisory Group. This builds on the discussion VHS organised with Audit Scotland during the audit process itself. The workshop will enable Audit Scotland to present the report to voluntary\, community\, social enterprise or housing organisations involved in the integration agenda. SUMMARY:Edinburgh- Audit Scotland: Health and Social Care Integration and the Third Sector
DESCRIPTION:Afternoon workshop with Lunch  \n12:30-15:30\, Tuesday 26 January 2016  \nHayweight House\, 23 Lauriston Street\, Edinburgh\, EH3 9DQ \nAn opportunity to actively engage with Audit Scotland\, following publication of their first audit on health and social care integration. \nAudit Scotland gives independent assurance to the people of Scotland that public money is spent properly\, efficiently and effectively.  Their report on Health and Social Care Integration was published 3rd December 2015. It says that significant risks must be addressed if the reform of health and social care is to fundamentally change how services are delivered and improve outcomes for the people who use them. \nAudit Scotland is keen to strengthen its engagement with the third sector as an important stakeholder in health and social care\, and VHS is coordinating this workshop on behalf of the Third Sector Health and Social Care Advisory Group. This builds on the discussion VHS organised with Audit Scotland during the audit process itself. \nThe workshop will enable Audit Scotland to present the report to voluntary\, community\, social enterprise or housing organisations involved in the integration agenda. DESCRIPTION:Mindroom is delighted to invite you to attend an all-day seminar led by Dr Paul Hutchins AM and Professor Loretta Giorcelli OAM to be held in Norton Park on Friday\, 19 February 2016. We are only able to offer this amazing opportunity at such a low cost due to the generosity of both speakers. (£27.57 Inc Booking fees) \nDr Hutchins and Professor Giorcelli together deliver a highly respected international programme on difficulties relating to language\, learning and behaviour. They will set out the challenges of supporting children and young people with additional support needs including autism\, learning disability and ADHD\, in education and offer a range of examples of good practice.  The ways in which schools can support and collaborate with parents will also be examined. \nThe day will include a Question and Answer panel session allowing lots of opportunity for audience participation. Loretta and Paul will be joined on the panel by Professor Anne O’Hare Director of the Salvesen Mindroom Centre and Mig Coupe\, Mindroom’s Head of Direct Help and Support. \nThis all-day seminar will be of particular interest to a wide range of professionals from multidisciplinary backgrounds who engage with children and young people with additional support needs in our schools. \nThere will be limited places available so we recommend that you book soon. \nHere is a little more information about Dr Hutchins and Professor Giorcelli: \nDr Hutchins is Senior Staff Physician to the Child Development Unit at The Children’s Hospital\, at Westmead Sydney Australia.  He is Senior Paediatric Consultant to The Children’s Hospital Education Research Institute\, which he helped establish. In 2016\, he is undertaking a sabbatical at Oxford University\, including the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and St Peter’s College. Dr Hutchins has presented to educators around the UK on collaborative special needs support. His particular interests in clinical practice\, teaching and research are in communication disorders and behavioural problems\, particularly in language disorders\, learning and attention deficits and autism.  He emphasises practical and positive approaches in professional support for the whole child and family. He is a member of the International Advisory Panel for UK Neurosciences and Education Forum. \nProfessor Giorcelli is a world-class authority in education and is engaged currently in work with a range of schools and authorities in Scotland and in the third year of a leadership training program “Quality Schools\, Inclusive Leaders” with 927 school leadership teams in the state of Queensland. SUMMARY:Free LGBT Capacity Training Available for Mental Health Organisations
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Dates and location to be confirmed. \nAs a result of stigma and discrimination\, evidence shows that suicidal behaviour is 3 times more prevalent among lesbian\, gay and bisexual (LGB) people when compared to the general population; this rises to 8 times among transgender people.  Self-harm is 8 times more prevalent among LGB people; rising to 20 times among transgender people.  Despite some successes in formal equality\, LGBT continue to face discrimination and barriers when accessing mainstream mental health services. \nBuilding on the work of our national mental health demonstration project\, LGBT Health and Well Being are funded by the Scottish Government to support mental health organisations or providers to strengthen their LGBT inclusive practice.  The Mental Health Capacity project supports mainstream mental health service providers to become more culturally competent in meeting the needs of LGBT people who use their services through: \n\nBespoke capacity building support to mental health providers to enable them to work through a Mental Health Audit Tool and identify actions that would enhance their practice\nDelivery of mental health-focused training on LGBT issues tailored to the specific needs of agencies\n\nThe Audit Tool focuses on five key areas: \n\nSupporting staff to develop cultural competence in working with LGBT people\nMaking services safe and accessible\nEnsuring policies and procedures support LGBT-inclusive practice\nEmbed equality monitoring of sexual orientation and gender identity\nDevelop proactive promotion\, publicity and engagement with LGBT people.\n\nWe are currently in the process of identifying organisations & service providers to take part in the project.   For questions\, more information\, or to register interest in taking part contact Kelly Minio-Paluello:  kelly@lgbthealth.org.uk or call 0141 271 2330 \nFor more information on the Mental Health Demonstration project click here:  http://www.lgbthealth.org.uk/online-resources/ \n
