SUMMARY:VHS @ The Gathering 2017: A national strategy to tackle social isolation and loneliness
DESCRIPTION:Join VHS at our event at the Gathering 2017 on the 23 February at the SECC in Glasgow to discuss a national strategy to tackle social isolation and loneliness. \nFind out more about the Gathering 2017 and the free events and exhibition for the third sector across Scotland. \nVHS event: Thursday 23rd February 1.30-2.30 \nPersistent loneliness causes real damage to people’s physical and mental health. It crushes the spirit and snatches away life chances by eroding people’s social skills and ability to benefit from education and work. It is not just an older people’s issue – children and young people are affected too. Poverty\, inequalities\, bereavement\, ill health or being forcibly isolated (e.g. through prison) can make it worse. The experience may be one of stigma\, social exclusion and bullying. The reasons are complex and the solutions not straightforward. The Scottish Government is at the early stages of developing a National Social Isolation Strategy “to ensure a holistic approach across government to problems of loneliness and isolation”. But what would a strategy look like and what is the vision? From our discussions with voluntary health organisations\, the vision is for a Scotland that is generous\, kind\, outward looking and inclusive. So we are collaborating with other charities\, including Befriending Networks and British Red Cross\, to influence the national strategy and to demonstrate leadership in creating the conditions for more social and nurturing communities. SUMMARY:Living and Learning Resource Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Most people know at least one person affected by M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis\, also diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). The condition is more common than multiple sclerosis or parkinson’s disease\, and can be equally disabling. Yet M.E. remains poorly understood. In the absence of treatment options or specialist support\, people with M.E. and those who care for them have to become highly self-reliant. Through the Living and Learning project\, Action for M.E. has tapped into the collective wisdom and learning of people with M.E. and carers to produce a new person-centred Guide to living with M.E.  \nThis launch event for the new Guide will be held from 7-9pm with guest speaker Stuart Murdoch (musician\, writer & filmmaker) and will feature storytelling performances by participants in the Living and Learning project and family members. These will be followed by an interactive Q&A session chaired by Blythe Robertson (Scottish Government) and including healthcare professionals. The evening will end with a Reception (wine\, tea & coffee will be served) providing the opportunity to talk to participants and share experiences. There is no charge to attend the evening event and reception.  \nWe are also holding an afternoon Story-Sharing Workshop from 2-4.30pm. Participants will share their M.E. self-management experience and the workshop is open to anyone wanting to know more about managing this illness or to share your story. SUMMARY:Living and Learning Resource Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Most people know at least one person affected by M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis\, also diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). The condition is more common than multiple sclerosis or parkinson’s disease\, and can be equally disabling. Yet M.E. remains poorly understood. In the absence of treatment options or specialist support\, people with M.E. and those who care for them have to become highly self-reliant. Through the Living and Learning project\, Action for M.E. has tapped into the collective wisdom and learning of people with M.E. and carers to produce a new person-centred Guide to living with M.E.  \nThis launch event for the new Guide will be held from 7-9pm with guest speaker Stuart Murdoch (musician\, writer & filmmaker) and will feature storytelling performances by participants in the Living and Learning project and family members. These will be followed by an interactive Q&A session chaired by Blythe Robertson (Scottish Government) and including healthcare professionals. The evening will end with a Reception (wine\, tea & coffee will be served) providing the opportunity to talk to participants and share experiences. There is no charge to attend the evening event and reception.  \nWe are also holding an afternoon Story-Sharing Workshop from 2-4.30pm. Participants will share their M.E. self-management experience and the workshop is open to anyone wanting to know more about managing this illness or to share your story. DESCRIPTION:With Health promising to be one of the key battlegrounds ahead of May’s Scottish Parliament elections\, British Heart Foundation Scotland would like to invite you to attend a series of open interviews Holyrood magazine will be hosting with the health leads for the SNP\, Scottish Labour and Scottish Conservatives. \nAhead of the publication of our Health Manifesto Special Issue\, Mandy Rhodes Managing Director of Holyrood Magazine will be interviewing Shona Robison MSP\, (Cabinet Secretary for Health\, Wellbeing & Sport\, Scottish Government and SNP)\, Jackson Carlaw MSP (Deputy Leader and Health Spokesperson\, Scottish Conservatives) and Jenny Marra MSP (Spokesperson for Equality\, Scottish Labour). \nThe events will last for approximately ninety minutes\, with refreshments available from 8:30am and the interviews starting at 9:00am. There will be the chance to open up the interviews to questions from the floor\, and attendees will be invited to submit questions on arrival.
