SUMMARY:Health Benefits from Healthcare Setting – building stronger partnerships between Health & Social Care and the Third Sector
DESCRIPTION:Using NHS green spaces to enhance health \n\nScottish Natural Heritage\, NHS Health Scotland and Forestry Commission Scotland have sought Voluntary Health Scotland’s support to highlight how the third sector can be a key partner with the NHS in making more effective use of green spaces for health promoting activities.  We have enlisted the support of Senscot so as to have a joint input at the good practice event taking place on 28th May at SNH’s Battleby Conference Centre near Perth. \n\nWhat’s the event about?\nThis event will explore how the grounds and neighbouring green space of healthcare settings such as hospitals\, care homes\, day centre services and GP practices can provide a sustainable health-promoting resource. The third sector is already involved in facilitating the use of the natural environment around many healthcare settings\, and in some cases is contributing to management and maintenance\, but there are opportunities for more engagement. This event will bring together key players from the health and third sectors to share practical examples\, explore links with the NHS Greenspace Demonstration Project\, and discuss how best to maximise effective use of the outdoors through partnership working. \n\nWho’s it for?\nThe event is relevant to staff in the Health and Third sectors who have a responsibility or interest in working together to deliver environmental\, health and community benefits from the natural environment around various types of healthcare settings.\nHealth & social care sector interest includes Area Health Board staff responsible for Estate management\, Health Promoting Health Service\, Third sector engagement\, Physical Activity promotion; plus facility managers in the voluntary sector; Community Health Partnerships; Health Improvement teams. Claire will share the voluntary health perspective on this\, drawing on what VHS members have told us about the challenges and opportunities they perceive if health inequalities are to be reduced.Edinburgh\, 10-12 April 2014 \nAbout the Event\nAfter inspiring discussions on health\, justice and the state of democracy held in Nottingham in July 2012\, the UK People’s Health Movement invites you to the second UK People’s Health Assembly. The focus will be on ‘building a progressive health movement in a time of austerity and social exclusion’. However\, 2nd PHA is not just about developing and strengthening our movement. It is also about impacting directly in the struggle for social justice: health for all\, decent living and working conditions for all\, equity and environmental justice. \nThere is an interesting programme\, with inspirational talks by distinguished speakers and several opportunities to share\, learn\, brainstorm and build synergies on cross-cutting issues of: Austerity and health; Social exclusion and vulnerabilities; and Environmental justice and occupational health. These three themes run in parallel through the Assembly\, moving from storytelling about people’s experiences\, to analysis\, to solutions and alternatives. In the final plenary these discussions come together to hear experiences of health movements from across the globe including India\, South Africa\, Uganda and Europe. \nSpeakers include Lesley Riddoch\, David Woodward\, Prof. Andrew Watterson\, Prof. Tracey Shildrick\, Louise Taggart\, Cathy McCormack\, Alex Scott-Samuel\, Sonya Scott among others. The assembly will offer a dynamic space and witness diverse participation from community based groups\, networks\, and activists who will contribute to discussions on the above themes. It is also about impacting directly in the struggle for social justice: health for all\, decent living and working conditions for all\, equity and environmental justice. \nThere is an interesting programme\, with inspirational talks by distinguished speakers and several opportunities to share\, learn\, brainstorm and build synergies on cross-cutting issues of: Austerity and health; Social exclusion and vulnerabilities; and Environmental justice and occupational health. These three themes run in parallel through the Assembly\, moving from storytelling about people’s experiences\, to analysis\, to solutions and alternatives. In the final plenary these discussions come together to hear experiences of health movements from across the globe including India\, South Africa\, Uganda and Europe. \nSpeakers include Lesley Riddoch\, David Woodward\, Prof. Andrew Watterson\, Prof. Tracey Shildrick\, Louise Taggart\, Cathy McCormack\, Alex Scott-Samuel\, Sonya Scott among others. The assembly will offer a dynamic space and witness diverse participation from community based groups\, networks\, and activists who will contribute to discussions on the above themes.
