DESCRIPTION:VHS would like to invite you to our next members meet up on the 21 May at 10am on Zoom. \n2024 is a year of celebration for VHS as we mark 20 years of our charity. The theme of 2024 is “Vital Health Sector” as this captures the role that our members play in the health of people across Scotland. This is also an year of change and opportunity as we welcome new Chief Executive\, Tejesh Mistry\, to lead the organisation. \nAs well as an introduction to Tejesh\, we want to offer a space to connect and share with other VHS members about the challenges we face together. Managers/Programme Leads for these Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nThis event will take place online on Zoom. \nOur 6th Knowledge Exchange event will take place on Wednesday 24th April from 10am – 12pm. \nOur Knowledge Exchange events are a really great opportunity for Community Link Workers to hear from organisations that can support them in their work and engage in Q&A and discussion with them. \nWe are delighted to announce that we will be joined by three speakers on the day: \nAnne Garry is an Independent Living Worker from Sight Scotland Veterans which  supports veterans experiencing sight loss and those who care for them.  She will provide an overview of their services and how to refer someone to them.  \nMaureen Hunter is Engagement Officer for Scotland at The Stroke Association. Maureen will talk about the impact and effects of stroke and the support for stroke survivors and their carers.   \nRebecca Bentley works for GamCare as the Gambling Awareness and Prevention (GAP) Programme Engagement Team Lead. DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a Primary Care setting in Scotland*** \nOur peer support events are all about promoting community link workers’ wellbeing and enabling them to share learning and good practice to support them in their roles. \nDuring our February peer support event\, we are keen to hear from CLWs about the different methods and resources you use to support and record your conversations with patients. Is there a specific model you use to structure your conversations? Are there particular tools that you find effective to help you engage with a patient? What’s a good way of starting a conversation with someone who is reluctant to talk? \nWe will also talk about the materials and resources that CLWs use to encourage patients and communities to actively engage with their services. \nTo encourage discussion and sharing of good practice\, we will go into smaller breakout groups to allow CLWs time to network with their peers and find out more about each other’s work. \nBook your place here.

In your experience\, what are the barriers to primary care\, and how are they widening the health inequalities gap? We are holding this Members Meet Up in order to contribute a strong voluntary health perspective to the work of the Primary Care Health Inequalities Development Group. \nBook a place here.\nMost of the time\, people use their own personal and community assets to manage their health and wellbeing and achieve the outcomes that matter to them. But primary care is their first point of contact with the NHS. This includes contact with community based services provided by general practitioners (GPs)\, community nurses\, dentists\, dental nurses\, optometrists\, dispensing opticians\, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. It can also be with allied health professionals such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists\, midwives and pharmacists. \nTo what extent are barriers to primary care contributing to excess deaths and premature disability related to socio-economic inequalities? This is the question posed in the Report of the Primary Care Short Life Working Group in 2022. The report called for further investigation into the barriers some groups experience in accessing primary care\, which it said may manifest themselves through waiting times; delayed presentations with serious conditions; “missingness” from health care; perverse incentives and behaviours created by targets; and health-damaging behaviours people adopt to self-manage or self-medicate when unable to access care and support. DESCRIPTION:VHS are hosting a Kitchen Table discussion\, in person\, at our office in Edinburgh\, on the morning of Tuesday 5th September\, to discuss the Scottish Government Human Rights Bill Consultation. We have invited selected members\, challengers and critical friends to join us at the Kitchen Table. The Bill will incorporate a range of economic\, social and cultural rights into Scots law for the first time. One of the rights listed is ‘The right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health”\, this will be the primary focus of our consultation response. However\, we are also interested in hearing our members’ views on incorporating the convention on the elimination of racial discrimination\, the elimination of discrimination against women and the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities\, not to mention plans to recognise the right to a healthy environment. So many of our rights are intertwined and impact our health and wellbeing\, we want to hear what they mean to our members and their work. \nWe are holding a Kitchen Table discussion to help us cast a critical eye over our consultation response focusing on health\, and to benefit from the perspectives\, expertise and experience of people with professional or personal knowledge of the issues. The main body of the meeting will be concentrating on the consultation questions. DESCRIPTION:Join us online on Zoom at our next VHS members meet up. \nThe Scottish Government is reviewing its National Outcomes\, which cover issues from protecting our environment\, to being healthy and active; with communities that are inclusive\, empowered\, resilient and safe\, to tackling poverty by sharing opportunities\, wealth and power more equally. The National Outcomes are part of the National Performance Framework which measures progress on these key areas and identifies areas which require investment. DESCRIPTION:In November 2022\, VHS published Broader Reach and Stronger Voice: Reflecting on the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. This was a qualitative study asking our member organisations and wider network about the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. \nAt our event on the 26th of January\, we will be bringing VHS members and partners together to discuss the potential and opportunities in partnership working for health. \nBook your place here.\nThe clear overwhelming message from the third sector is that we want to be more involved in future public health interventions to reduce inequalities. The COVID-19 vaccine programme has provided us with multiple positive examples of how partnership working can benefit communities and individuals. \nThird sector and voluntary organisations are trusted by the communities we serve and are therefore well placed to support future public health interventions. The sector is already working with communities who are often underserved and falling through the cracks of services. DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a Primary Care setting in Scotland. Managers/Programme Leads for these Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nThis event will take place online on Zoom. \nThe Scottish Community Link Worker Network will be hosting its second Knowledge Exchange Event on Thursday 19th January from 10am – 12pm \nBook  your place here.\nOur first speaker will be Kevin Duffy\, Scotland Partnership Manager at the Money and Pensions Service. Kevin will provide an overview of the services that CLWs can access to support people’s financial wellbeing. \nOur second speaker will be Kerry Knox\, Head of Family Support from Families Outside\, which is the only national charity which works solely on supporting families impacted by imprisonment in Scotland. SUMMARY:VHS AGM and Annual Lecture 2022
DESCRIPTION:Mark St Andrew’s Day with VHS by joining us for our Annual Lecture and AGM on Wednesday 30th November 2022\, and enjoy a networking lunch of miniature haggis\, neeps and tatties. Taking place at the wonderful Scottish Storytelling Centre  43-45 High Street\, Edinburgh EH1 1SR\, the programme runs from 10.00 am (registration from 9.30 am) to 12.30 pm. \nWe have two first-rate speakers this year\, who will approach the theme of inequalities from their particular perspectives: \n\nSusan Murray\, Director of The David Hume Institute an independent think tank based in Scotland\, working to encourage diversity of thought and increase understanding about the economy and related public policy.\nSusan Brown\, Assistant Clerk to the Scottish Parliament’s Health\, Social Care and Sport Committee\, which published Tackling health inequalities in Scotland on 28th September 2022\, the findings and recommendations of its Inquiry into health inequalities.\n\nThis event is free to attend and will be of interest to anyone with an active involvement or interest in health related policy\, research or practice\, whatever sector you are involved in. DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a Primary Care setting in Scotland. Managers/Programme Leads for these Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nThis event will take place online on Zoom. \nAs part of Audit Scotland’s ongoing performance audit of mental health services for adults in Scotland\, Community Link Workers are invited to participate in one of two online focus groups facilitated jointly by Audit Scotland and Voluntary Health Scotland. The groups have very limited spaces. \nAudit Scotland are committed to an audit of Mental Health Services\, which will look across the wide range of services that aim to support and improve the mental health and wellbeing of adults in Scotland. The overall aim of this performance audit is to answer the question: \nHow effectively are adult mental health services across Scotland being delivered? \nThe focus groups will seek the views of Community Link Workers in relation to: \n\nWhat progress has been made in improving adult mental health services across Scotland since the publication of the mental health strategy 20172027? This will include topics such as whether adults have access to timely and appropriate support that improves outcomes\, how well partners work together to deliver services\, and work to tackle mental health inequalities.\nHow well managed are the resources for Scotland’s adult mental health services? This will include workforce pressures and how these are being addressed\, and how public money is used to support adults’ mental health and wellbeing.\nHow achievable are plans to address the ongoing and upcoming challenges facing the delivery of adult mental health services?\n\nThe voices of Community Link Workers will provide invaluable insight to this research as you have first-hand knowledge and experience of the issues people face when accessing mental health services\, and of the services being delivered. \nWe will be joined by: \n\nEva Thomas-Tudo\, Audit Manager \, Audit Scotland\nVeronica Cameron\, Senior Auditor\, Audit Scotland\n\nFind out more about the Audit Scotland work here. \nBook your place here.\nWe are running this focus group on the 10th November 10am-12 pm.
