DESCRIPTION:VHS is holding another round table to facilitate engagement between Audit Scotland and members of the Third Sector Health and Social Care Collaborative. Hosted at the Audit Scotland offices in Edinburgh\, this timely meeting takes place not long before the formal publication of Audit Scotland’s second report on Health and Social Care Integration. \nThe  aim of the round table is to enable Audit Scotland to build on the engagement and discussion begun at the first round table (held 23rd May) and to give Collaborative members an opportunity to get an early insight into emerging themes and messages from this latest audit. \nThe integration of health and social care services is a major programme of reform\, affecting most health and care services and over £8 billion of public money. The reforms are far reaching\, and aim to ensure services are well integrated and that people receive the care they need at the right time and in the right place. SUMMARY:Joint Cross Party Group Meeting: Health Inequalities and Improving Scotland's Health
DESCRIPTION:The Cross-Party Group on Health Equalities and the Cross-Party Group on Improving Scotland’s Health 2021 and Beyond are delighted to invite you to a joint meeting on Tuesday 22 May from 5.30pm to 7pm in Committee Room 4 of The Scottish Parliament.  The meeting will explore health inequalities and the right to health\, with a particular focus on unhealthy environments and empowering communities to improve their health. \nWe have two excellent speakers: \nDr Niamh Shortt\, Reader in Health Geography and co-director of the Centre for Environment\, Society and Health (CRESH)\, University of Edinburgh\, whose research considers how the environment shapes our health\, health behaviours and resulting health inequalities. She focuses on the effect of place and in particular the idea of the locale in which various aspects of the social and natural environment converge to influence health outcomes. Based on the premise that place matters for health\, her research explores a wide range of area effects and considers the implications for health. Niamh’s current work focusses on alcohol and tobacco environments in Scotland and the role of retail density. \nHilda Campbell\, Chief Executive\, COPE Scotland\, a community led service in West Glasgow committed to finding new ways of addressing mental/emotional distress and promoting resilience and self-management through the principles of co-production and design. 24 years on\, COPE Scotland has supported more than 20\,000 people. Hilda will explain how health inequalities can be challenged through a community development and assets based approach that engages the knowledge and skills of people with lived experience in identifying their own solutions as well as designing local services. \nThe meeting will be co-chaired by Clare Haughey MSP and David Stewart MSP. \nThis meeting is now fully booked and we have a waiting list.  \nPlease get in touch if you would like to be added to the waiting list. \n****Please note that due to the likely level of interest we will confirm to that you have secured a place at least one week in advance. SUMMARY:Best Start Foods: making the most of the Healthy Start reform
DESCRIPTION:Join Nourish Scotland and Voluntary Health Scotland on 22nd May to discuss how the reform of Healthy Start into Best Start Foods in Scotland can best benefit our low-income families.\nWe will hear from the Scottish Government’s Welfare Foods team about their proposals for a new Best Start Foods scheme\, and from Sandra Passmore from Birmingham City Council about their fantastic work trying to understand and break the barriers to Healthy Start uptake in Birmingham. \nThe aim of this event is to provide a space for individuals\, third-sector organisations\, community groups\, local authorities\, and retailers to learn from each other and think creatively about solutions that will enable Scotland to lead the way in the UK in tackling dietary health inequalities and closing the attainment gap. \nThis opportunity for innovative and cross-sector thinking comes at a crucial time; a month before the end of the Scottish Government’s consultation on Best Start Foods\, open until 28th June. \nBook your place \nBackground information\nOn 4th April 2018 the Scottish Government published their proposals for how they intend to take the newly devolved Healthy Start scheme forward. Healthy Start is a UK Government programme subsidising fruit and veg (as well as milk and formula milk) for pregnant women and families with young children who are on low-income. It is the main public scheme tackling financial barriers to healthy diets\, but uptake is low and modernisation long overdue. \nHealthy diets from the earliest age are absolutely key to the Scottish Government’s stated objectives to close the attainment gap and ensure that every child has the best possible start in life. The devolution of Healthy Start is therefore an important opportunity to improve how low-income families in Scotland are supported in the early years to access the crucial ingredients of a healthy diet\, in particular fruit and vegetables. \nThe Scottish Government is proposing a new\, modernised and simplified scheme: Best Start Foods. In the ongoing consultation they ask for feedback on their proposals\, as well as ideas for how to boost the uptake of the new scheme and for ways to support families to establish healthy eating patterns.

Healthy Start is a UK Government programme subsidising fruit and veg (as well as milk and formula milk) for pregnant women and families with young children who are on low-income. It is the main public scheme tackling financial barriers to healthy diets\, but uptake is low and modernisation long overdue. \nHealthy diets from the earliest age are absolutely key to the Scottish Government’s stated objectives to close the attainment gap and ensure that every child has the best possible start in life. The devolution of Healthy Start is therefore an important opportunity to improve how low-income families in Scotland are supported in the early years to access the crucial ingredients of a healthy diet\, in particular fruit and vegetables. \nThe Scottish Government is proposing a new\, modernised and simplified scheme: Best Start Foods. In the ongoing consultation they ask for feedback on their proposals\, as well as ideas for how to boost the uptake of the new scheme and for ways to support families to establish healthy eating patterns.

SUMMARY:Volunteering: The Golden Thread in Health
DESCRIPTION:A free conference to explore how the NHS\, the third sector and other health and social care partners can collaborate to create high-quality impact volunteering that enhances service delivery and patient outcomes. \nThe conference will explore how colleagues across NHS and third sector can work together to create high-quality volunteering  in NHS settings\, focussing on volunteering that enhances safe\, effective and person centred care for patients. \nEvery day across Scotland volunteers in health settings give their time and energy to help make a difference to the lives of patients. Volunteers can help save staff time\, increase patient satisfaction\, improve patient outcomes and provide a life enhancing experience for volunteers themselves. Over many decades the NHS has developed its own volunteer roles and engaged its own volunteers directly\, and the NHS also partners with charities and other third sector organisations to deploy additional volunteers in NHS settings. \nSince 2011 the Scottish Health Council has hosted the Volunteering in NHS Scotland programme which supports boards to develop and embed the volunteer contribution to health service delivery. The report describes and analyses the findings from a study the Scottish Government asked VHS to undertake during 2016\, to help identify the number and range of Link Worker initiatives in primary care settings currently being delivered by the third sector across Scotland. 75 organisations contributed evidence via our online surveys and three organisations provided detailed case studies. \nSimon Jaquet\, the researcher and author of the report\, will present the findings and delegates will receive a hard copy of the report. This seminar is of particular interest to third sector and other organisations with an active interest in gaining an insight into the national picture in relation to our sector’s involvement in community link working and considering common themes and emerging trends.
