DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the Cross Party Group on Health Inequalities will take place at 6pm on the 21st January. She leads the School’s office in Berlin and her work is in the field of health policy and systems\, with a focus on the political economy of global health. A policy analyst by training\, she worked on HIV and AIDS\, initially for the Panos Institute based in Zambia\, as an HIV researcher for Amnesty International\, and on health equity and social determinants for WHO. DESCRIPTION:This is the second in our series of cross-sectoral round tables on this topic. The project is a collaboration between VHS and Support in Mind Scotland\, with the support of Faith in Older People\, and kindly hosted by the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh. \nThe first round table explored the serious gaps in awareness\, policy and practice concerning the health and care needs of  people aged 65+  who have serious mental health issues such as schizophrenia\, bipolar disorder or depression. Some people with mental illness are ‘falling off a cliff’ at 65 because of these gaps. \nThe second round table is being convened to look at new evidence that VHS has been gathering\, with the support of NHS Health Scotland’s Knowledge Services\, in the intervening months. \nThis is a by-invitation only event\, but if you have a particular interest and believe you have something to contribute to the discussion\, please contact Lauren Blair.

SUMMARY:Third Sector Round Table: Preventing and Controlling Infection in Community Settings
DESCRIPTION:Book your place here \nThe profile of health protection has increased significantly in recent years with issues such as immunisation\, food borne infections\, pandemic flu\, healthcare associated infection and communicable diseases regularly being in the public eye. Preventing and controlling infection is a crucial part of health protection. It includes preventing the transmission of communicable diseases and managing outbreaks and the other incidents which threaten the public health. \nThis round table is an opportunity for third sector organisations to discuss the health protection issues they encounter in their work\, find out more about the support and resources Health Protection Scotland (HPS) can offer\, and share any good policies and practice. The round table is also an opportunity to explore whether the NHS Scotland National Infection Prevention and Control Manual is a useful resource for the third sector\, and whether other resources would be useful. We will also discuss how best to develop further engagement between HPS and our sector\, taking into account Public Health Scotland’s future role in leading partnership working\, innovation and meaningful change across the whole public health system. \nAgenda Infection Prevention and Control Round Table \nRegistration for this round table is open to people working in the third sector only. Preventing and controlling infection is a crucial part of health protection. It includes preventing the transmission of communicable diseases and managing outbreaks and the other incidents which threaten the public health. \nThis round table is an opportunity for third sector organisations to discuss the health protection issues they encounter in their work\, find out more about the support and resources Health Protection Scotland (HPS) can offer\, and share any good policies and practice. The round table is also an opportunity to explore whether the NHS Scotland National Infection Prevention and Control Manual is a useful resource for the third sector\, and whether other resources would be useful. DESCRIPTION:This cross-sectoral round table is a collaboration between VHS\, Support in Mind Scotland and Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh. \nThere is an urgent need to shine a light into the evident chasm into which people fall at age 65 if they either have a long-standing mental health condition (e.g. schizophrenia) or if they develop one (e.g. depression or anxiety). \nThe round table discussion will focus on what happens to people with mental health conditions other than dementia once they become 65. The issues concern under-diagnosis\, under-provision\, and poor transitions from ‘adult’ services to ‘older people’ services\, discrimination and flouting of human rights. We believe this is a policy as well as a practice issue.   People with schizophrenia are living longer thanks to better care and treatment\, but health and care services are not adapting fast enough to the needs of frail older people with serious mental health conditions. For some people living with schizophrenia\, their 65th birthday may trigger the removal their Community Psychiatric Nurse as they may no longer qualify for ‘adult’ services\, and we have heard of admissions to locked dementia wards for want of other care options. The mental health strategy had little to say about older people’s mental health other than dementia and we fear the forthcoming older people’s framework will focus largely on ‘ageing well’ and say little about mental health. \nMore evidence and action is needed if policy and practice is to improve. SUMMARY:Culture\, Health and Wellbeing in Rural Scotland
DESCRIPTION:This free to attend briefing and discussion event is a joint collaboration between VHS and the Scottish Rural Health Partnership. The event will explore a range of topics concerning the relationship between cultural interventions and our health and wellbeing\, with the focus on rural Scotland. \nEngagement with culture and the arts has tangible effects on people’s health. It supports individuals to thrive\, and can aid recovery\, shorten the length of hospital stay and reduce reliance on GP visits and medication. It encourages people to learn and gets people actively involved in their community. SUMMARY:Audit Scotland Review of Health and Social Care Integration
DESCRIPTION:Briefing and discussion  \nAn opportunity for third sector organisations to actively engage with Audit Scotland on their latest progress report and recommendations on integration: Health and Social Care Integration: Update on Progress published 15th November 2018. SUMMARY:VHS at The Gathering: Mental wellbeing\, social isolation and loneliness in rural Scotland
DESCRIPTION:This partnership event with the Scottish Rural Health Partnership(SRHP) aims to shine a light on health issues distinctive to rural and remote areas in Scotland and to give space to explore collaborative approaches to addressing these issues.
