Jitka undertakes research in Public Health with special interest in Ageing\, Dementia\, Exercise and Mental Health. \nIn this series we are exploring how important it is\, over our lifespan\, to maintain a well-balanced nutrition and hydration as well as regular physical and social activity in the older age\, also known as the ‘Five Pillars of Ageing Well’. The event will provide the opportunity for voluntary health organisations to engage with NDS and to explore issues and approaches regarding digital health inequalities. The event is particularly relevant in light of COVID-19 driving more health and care services online. \nNow Fully Booked but you can join the wait list here. \nAims/objectives of the event: \n\nTo explore the ways in which digital health can widen health inequalities\nTo identify good digital health literacy interventions to mitigate health inequalities\nTo agree joint actions taking forward digital health literacy interventions discussed\n\nBackground: \nScotland’s health is improving\, but the gap in health outcomes between the most and least advantaged groups in society is widening. We call this gap health inequalities. Technology has the potential to reduce health inequalities by enabling people to access digital health information and tools to help them to better manage their health and care.  However\, left unchecked\, digital technologies could also widen health inequalities. \n\nHealth inequalities are the ‘systematic differences in the health of people occupying unequal positions in society’.\nThey are strongly associated with socio-economic inequalities but can also result from discrimination.\nHealth inequalities are unfair\, not inevitable\, and must be tackled.\n\nThere is a clear and strong relationship between groups that are digitally excluded and those at greater risk of poor health.  People from excluded groups or living in deprived areas often lack the skills\, ability and means to get online.  Helping them to access and use digital health services and tools can: \n\nimprove their health literacy & help them to better manage their health and care\noffer them a better choice and convenience of service that suits their day to day lives\nimprove our relationships and how we communicate with patients\nreduce the cost and burden on frontline services\n\nWorking in collaboration  \nBoth NDS and VHS have programmes of work to mitigate health inequalities. We understand that food insecurity under COVID-19 is firstly rooted in poverty and secondly is an issue of poor access to food. \nPublic Health Scotland (PHS) has been working to identify how COVID-19 is impacting on the factors that give rise to poor health outcomes. PHS has set up a group to focus on food insecurity. It aims to map what is happening at a grassroots levels to tackle food insecurity during COVID-19\, capture effective responses and develop guidance on how to minimise negative health responses caused by COVID-19 and increasing food insecurity. \nTo support the work of this group VHS is hosting a meeting on Zoom to hear from voluntary and community sector organisations so as to identify: \n\nwho the vulnerable groups are\nwhat is working to tackle both the pre-existing food insecurities n Scotland and those that have come to light due to COVID-19.\nwhat long term actions are required to mitigate food insecurity\n\nPlease contact Lauren Blair if you have any questions: lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk

SUMMARY:Impact of COVID-19 on Voluntary Health Organisations: Members zoom meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us on zoom to discuss the findings in our briefing paper about the voluntary health sector responses to COVID-19. VHS has conducted a survey of our member organisations and wider network to help establish the impact COVID-19 is having on the health and wellbeing of people supported by organisations and on organisations’ own ability to continue supporting people. This briefing sets out the top-line results of the research and highlights the speed\, creativity and flexibility that the third sector is demonstrating as it responds to the crisis\, as well as the substantial challenges and barriers it is facing. \nPlaces are capped and open to all full member organisations of VHS.

But what does this mean in a rural context\, and what role does the rural third and community sector have to play in helping transform primary care? Rural Scotland has a growing elderly population\, increasing demand for treatment and care\, a dispersed population and challenges associated with the workforce supply for health and social care – all combining to have an impact on primary care services. \n\nHow to put general practice and primary care at the heart of the healthcare system in rural Scotland\nHow to ensure people needing care are more informed and empowered\, have access to the right person at the right time\, and can remain living at home where possible.\n\nThis workshop will be of particular interest to voluntary and community health organisations and third sector interfaces. SUMMARY:Cross Party Group on Health Inequalities: Study Visit- Art in Hospitals
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opportunity for CPG members to engage with a practical approach to addressing health inequalities in a clinical setting. \nThe charity Art in Hospital enables patients to develop their own creativity through participation in a visual arts programme in hospitals\, care homes and the community. Established in 1991\, they create strong links between medicine\, treatment\, care\, patient environment and artistic practice to improve health and wellbeing\, patient care and patient outcomes. \nBarbara McEwan Gulliver\, Artistic Director\, will give a short presentation which will be followed by an opportunity to observe a workshop and meet with patients\, clinicians\, artists\, family members and staff. \nRefreshments will be served. \nTo register to attend\, please contact Lauren Blair- lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk 0131 474 6189.
