SUMMARY:Audit Scotland and General Practice in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Join VHS and Audit Scotland at our online event to explore the recent report which focuses on Primary Care pressures and impact for health inequalities and third sector partners. \nThe report highlights that a Scottish Government agreement with GPs to improve general practice has failed to deliver on several of its commitments. The 2018 General Medical Service (GMS) contract aimed to address the financial pressures and growing workloads facing GPs\, and to improve patients’ access to care. However\, seven years on: \n\nthe estimated number of whole-time equivalent GPs has fallen\npressure on general practice has increased\nproposals to support GP teams with more nurses\, physiotherapists and other specialists have moved more slowly than planned\nand people report finding it more difficult to access care.\n\nAudit Scotland will present on the key messages and recommendations from the general practice performance audit\, and an outline of findings relating to inequalities. SUMMARY:VHS Consultation Event: Chronic Pain
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Government have opened a consultation looking at their Quality Prescribing for Chronic Pain guide for improvement 2026-2029. One of the areas they would like views on is non-pharmacological approaches\, including social prescribing. \nChronic pain\, defined as persistent pain lasting beyond three months\, can significantly impact quality of life\, affecting physical and mental wellbeing.  In Scotland\, the Scottish Health Survey 2022 indicates that approximately 38% of adults live with chronic pain. The prevalence of chronic pain is significantly higher in areas of socioeconomic deprivation. \nVHS is planning to respond to the consultation reflecting the views and experiences of our members and stakeholders. SUMMARY:SCLWN: Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a primary care setting in Scotland. Managers/Programme Leads for Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nFollowing a successful training event in June\, The Scottish Community Link Worker Network is working again with award-winning charity Ygam to offer CLWs City and Guilds Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training in November.  The timing of this training is particularly pertinent with the recent release of the Public Health Scotland Healthcare Needs Assessment of Gambling Harm in Scotland. This document also recommends the new NICE Guidelines on this topic\, which say the following: \n“Health and social care professionals should consider asking people about gambling (even if they have no obvious risk factors for gambling-related harm) when asking them about smoking\, alcohol consumption or use of other substances (for example\, as part of a holistic assessment or health check\, when registering for a service such as with a GP or in contacts with social services).” \nIn addition\, 83% of 8-25-year-olds game at least three times a week (with 58% gaming every single day)\, and there was a 3-fold increase in referrals for support for gaming disorder between 2019 and 2020. \nYgam’s workshop will help CLWs to open up conversations on these topics (which can be tricky to do due to the shame and stigma associated with them)\, as well as providing guidance on how to support and signpost a patient who is experiencing gaming or gambling harm. \nBook your place here.

DESCRIPTION:**This event is for Primary Care CLWs and CLW Programme Leads.**  \nThis training event\, in partnership with Cruse Scotland\, will focus on how to talk compassionately about death\, dying and bereavement. The course is designed to build CLWs’ confidence and insight on the differing expressions of grief responses following bereavement. DESCRIPTION:What areas of equality work does your organisation want to focus on most? \nAt our Annual Conference in October\, CEMVO Scotland asked this question across our network. Two themes stood out clearly: workforce diversity and community engagement strategy. \nTo build on this\, we’re hosting an interactive session that begins with a grounding in key anti-racism concepts—including race\, racism and anti-racism\, intersectionality\, privilege\, microaggressions\, and effective allyship. This shared foundation will support our ongoing work to address racialised health inequalities across the sector. \nIn the second half of the session\, we’ll move into group discussions to identify practical anti-racist actions\, highlight good practice\, and explore areas for development. This is where we’ll dig deeper into the themes of workforce diversity and community engagement. \nAnyone who attends either introductory session (January or February) will also be invited to an online workshop on the 25 March\, where participants will help co-create anti-racism guidance for the sector. \nWe welcome staff in any role\, at any stage of their learning journey—no prior knowledge needed. \nReserve your spot in this workshop here.\nA light lunch will be provided after the training. \n

For a preventative approach to really work in Scotland\, we need a clear and consistently applied definition of prevention across all policy development areas. Prevention is complex and requires a whole system approach that includes the public\, third and community sectors and those who directly experience health inequalities. \nOur event will challenge panellists from across the third and public sectors to build a consensus on the top 3 actions required to transition to a prevention-centred health system.
