SUMMARY:Falkirk Funders Fayre 2016
DESCRIPTION:Finding new sources of funding is crucial to the third sector. CVS Falkirk and Falkirk Council are pleased to announce that they are hosting another FREE Funders Fayre event on Tuesday 8th March 2016 at the Bowhouse Community Centre\, Grangemouth. \nThe Funders Fayre returns after the success of last year’s event\, which attracted more than 150 visitors and 18 funders. This year\, 20 exhibitors will be hosting information stalls\, including the Big Lottery\, Robertson Trust\, LEADER\, Localgiving.com and Tesco Greenspace\, amongst others. This event is designed to give third sector organisations the opportunity to meet with a range of diverse funders\, and to learn about the various grant funding schemes available. \nOrganisations will have the opportunity to ask funders questions\, and learn how to apply for funding and about the criteria funders use when assessing applications. \nTo register for a place at the Falkirk Funders Fayre 2016\, please click here for the details on how to book For further information\, please call Laura Jamieson 01324 692000 or email laura@cvsfalkirk.org.uk \nBackground: \nAccording to Localgiving.com: \n\nThe average online donation is twice that of the average offline donation\n88% of charity professionals expect digital fundraising to grow from 7% of total fundraising to 20% or more within the next 10 years.\n\nFor many charities and voluntary organisations\, securing timely grant funding can mean the difference between whether or not they are able to continue providing support. \nCVS Falkirk hopes that\, by attending this event\, third sector organisations can identify funding opportunities to help them deliver new projects or for the continuation of existing services. \nThe Funders Fayre 2015 resulted in: \nOver 150 people and 18 funders in attendance. \n\nApplications to the value of £440\,000 were submitted.\nGrants amounting to £206\,000 were awarded.\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Tackling inequality through breaking the link between smoking and poverty
DESCRIPTION:What can be done to help reduce the burden of tobacco on our low income communities? \n The Scottish Tobacco-free Alliance (STA) invites you to an afternoon seminar on Monday 29th of February in order to examine this important sticking point to delivering reduced health inequality. \nAs you will know\, smoking rates in the most deprived communities are four times higher than in the richest. Almost half of adults who are permanently sick or disabled\, or who are unemployed and seeking work\, smoke tobacco. Smoking rates are particularly high amongst people with mental health issues\, the prison population and children in care. \nCrucially\, in every one of these groups most of those who smoke say that they want to stop. So the health\, social and economic inequality caused by smoking is not about lifestyle choice but about people affected by social and economic factors which push some groups to smoke and make it more difficult for them to act on their desire to stop. \nProfessor Amanda Amos from University of Edinburgh Centre for Population Health Sciences has agreed to give an overview of the factors which lead to higher smoking levels in low-income households and the inequality this causes\, and Frances Thirlway from University of Durham will give an insight into the part played by tobacco in low income communities and the extent to which current health messaging has influenced behaviour change amongst individuals experiencing poverty. \nThe seminar will then be open for discussion as to how best to encourage and support quitting in low income communities served by community owned assets\, foodbanks and agencies tasked with making life better through self-improvement and self-advocacy. \nIf you have pondered the dilemma of how to support people out of poverty without putting vital trust or progress at risk\, you will find this seminar of real interest and can help build the consensus needed to really get to grips with this major contributor to health inequality and community impoverishment. \nPlease consider attending or engaging a colleague to attend on behalf of your organisation. \nTo register please email Clair Kirkwood: ckirkwood@ashscotland.org.uk \nFor more information click here.   \n

SUMMARY:End of life care in Scottish hospitals: opportunities for wider engagement
DESCRIPTION:End of life care in Scottish hospitals: opportunities for wider engagement \nTuesday 10 November 2015\, 9.30am – 12.30pm \nGlasgow Concert Hall\, 2 Sauchiehall Street\, Glasgow G2 3NY \nSign up for your place here: http://bit.ly/1Qm7S7Y \nOver 54\,000 people die in Scotland every year and over 50% of these people will die in hospital. \nResearch from the University of Glasgow shows one in ten people will die in hospital on their current admission and that nearly one third of them are within the last year of their life. This rises to almost half for the oldest groups of people. \nKnowing this presents us with a huge opportunity to think about the potential the hospital provides for advanced care planning and for talking with patients and families about their goals for care when time is becoming short. \nHow can patients in hospital who are nearing the end of life be identified? What tools and methods seem to have value? What role can hospitals play in thinking more ‘structurally’ about their approach to end of life care? What does this mean for specialist palliative care services and what can be done to support all staff to engage more effectively with the end of life care needs of those for whom they care? \nMarie Curie and the University of Glasgow invite you to this important seminar where we will explore the research itself in more detail and also what this means for people in Scotland. Come and participate in the discussion of how we can actively engage patients\, families\, carers and clinicians in conversations about end of life issues – in particular in the hospital setting. \nAs the Scottish Government develops a new National Clinical Strategy\, a Strategic Framework for Action on End of Life and Palliative Care\, and new Integrated Joint Boards look to develop their strategic and local delivery plans there has never been a more pertinent time to look at how people at the end of life receive care in acute settings. \nWe have an exciting range of speakers lined up\, including: \n\nProfessor David Clark\, Director of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at University of Glasgow\nProfessor Craig White\, Divisional Clinical Lead at the Scottish Government\nOthers to be confirmed\n\nSign up for your place here: http://bit.ly/1Qm7S7Y \nPlease contact Susan Lowes with any questions about this event: \nSusan Lowes\, Policy and Public Affairs Manager\, Scotland\, Marie Curie \nT: 0131 561 3902 \nM: 07714138347 \n  \n
