SUMMARY:Workshop: Accessing 2022 Scottish Census Data with National Records Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a practical online workshop led by the National Records of Scotland\, exploring how to access and interrogate 2022 Scottish Census data\, as well as other NRS datasets. \nScotland’s Census is the official count of every person and household in the country. There has been a census in Scotland every 10 years since 1801\, except 1941. The 2021 census in Scotland was moved to 2022 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe answers people give to census questions help build up a picture of the population\, and present a unique opportunity to explore trends within the whole population. \nThis session will provide hints and tips to make the most from the Census Table-builder\, as well as introducing a range of other tools and datasets available through NRS with clear guidance on how they can be applied in practice. Using sector‑specific examples\, the workshop will focus on the particular needs of VHS members\, helping attendees build confidence in finding\, interpreting\, and using data to support their work. \nThis online workshop will be hosted on Teams. \nSign up now!\n

SUMMARY:SCLWN: YGam Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:This event is for Primary Care Community Link Workers and Community Link Worker Programme Leads. \nYgam is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to preventing gaming and gambling harms among young people. Their work bridges the critical knowledge gap between young people’s digital lives and the adults who guide them. They believe in harm prevention through education\, empowering the people who can make a real difference. \nFollowing a successful training event in June 2025\, The Scottish Community Link Worker Network is working again with award-winning charity Ygam to offer CLWs City and Guilds Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training.  The timing of this training is particularly pertinent with the release last year of the Public Health Scotland Healthcare Needs Assessment of Gambling Harm in Scotland. This document also recommends the new NICE Guidelines on this topic\, which say the following: \n“Health and social care professionals should consider asking people about gambling (even if they have no obvious risk factors for gambling-related harm) when asking them about smoking\, alcohol consumption or use of other substances (for example\, as part of a holistic assessment or health check\, when registering for a service such as with a GP or in contacts with social services).” \n30% of 11-17-year-olds have spent their own money on gambling in the last 12 months (far more than the 15% who have vaped in the same time period)\, and 87% of 8-25-year-olds play video games at least 3 times a week. \nYgam’s workshop will help CLWs to open up conversations on these topics (which can be tricky to do due to the shame and stigma associated with them)\, as well as providing guidance on how to support and signpost a patient who is experiencing gaming or gambling harm. \nBook your place here!

SUMMARY:*Online* Anti-racism Workshop with CEMVO
DESCRIPTION:What areas of equality work does your organisation want to focus on most? \nAt our Annual Conference in October\, CEMVO Scotland asked this question across our network. Two themes stood out clearly: workforce diversity and community engagement strategy. \nTo build on this\, we’re hosting an interactive online session that begins with a grounding in key anti-racism concepts—including race\, racism and anti-racism\, intersectionality\, privilege\, microaggressions\, and effective allyship. This shared foundation will support our ongoing work to address racialised health inequalities across the sector. \nIn the second half of the session\, we’ll move into group discussions to identify practical anti-racist actions\, highlight good practice\, and explore areas for development. This is where we’ll dig deeper into the themes of workforce diversity and community engagement. \nAnyone who attends either introductory session (January or February) will also be invited to an online workshop in March\, where participants will help co-create anti-racism guidance for the sector. \nWe welcome staff in any role\, at any stage of their learning journey—no prior knowledge needed. \nReserve your spot in this workshop here.

SUMMARY:*In-Person* Anti-racism Workshop with CEMVO
DESCRIPTION:What areas of equality work does your organisation want to focus on most? \nAt our Annual Conference in October\, CEMVO Scotland asked this question across our network. Two themes stood out clearly: workforce diversity and community engagement strategy. \nTo build on this\, we’re hosting an interactive session that begins with a grounding in key anti-racism concepts—including race\, racism and anti-racism\, intersectionality\, privilege\, microaggressions\, and effective allyship. \nAnyone who attends either introductory session (January or February) will also be invited to an online workshop on the 25 March\, where participants will help co-create anti-racism guidance for the sector. \nWe welcome staff in any role\, at any stage of their learning journey—no prior knowledge needed. \nReserve your spot in this workshop here.\nA light lunch will be provided after the training. \n

SUMMARY:SCLWN: Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a primary care setting in Scotland. Managers/Programme Leads for Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nFollowing a successful training event in June\, The Scottish Community Link Worker Network is working again with award-winning charity Ygam to offer CLWs City and Guilds Gaming and Gambling Harm Prevention Training in November.  The timing of this training is particularly pertinent with the recent release of the Public Health Scotland Healthcare Needs Assessment of Gambling Harm in Scotland. This document also recommends the new NICE Guidelines on this topic\, which say the following: \n“Health and social care professionals should consider asking people about gambling (even if they have no obvious risk factors for gambling-related harm) when asking them about smoking\, alcohol consumption or use of other substances (for example\, as part of a holistic assessment or health check\, when registering for a service such as with a GP or in contacts with social services).” \nIn addition\, 83% of 8-25-year-olds game at least three times a week (with 58% gaming every single day)\, and there was a 3-fold increase in referrals for support for gaming disorder between 2019 and 2020. \nYgam’s workshop will help CLWs to open up conversations on these topics (which can be tricky to do due to the shame and stigma associated with them)\, as well as providing guidance on how to support and signpost a patient who is experiencing gaming or gambling harm. \nBook your place here.

SUMMARY:Health Inequalities Inquiry Engagement Event: Equalities and Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Parliament’s Health\, Social Care & Sport Committee is holding an inquiry into what can be done about health inequalities. The Parliament’s Community & Participation Team are hosting four informal engagement events as part of their scrutiny of the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nThis online engagement event will focus on equalities and human rights. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nSocial injustice can create conditions that can negatively affect the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. \n\nSome individuals and groups\, most often those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged\, have poorer health outcomes than others.\nThese individuals and groups can experience barriers accessing health and care\, these can be physical\, financial\, mental or social related to stigma/discrimination.\nHuman rights violations can contribute to and exacerbate poor health.\n\nIn the context of equalities and human rights we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. If you are interested in contributing to this session we would be grateful if you could contact Kimberley with your expression of interest.

It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nChanges in social security policies can have significant effects on health and wellbeing. \n\nAusterity\, cuts to benefits and tax credits can have an impact on health and wellbeing\, and life expectancy\, this can often have the worst impact in the most deprived areas.\nImprovements in social security benefits can improve mental health outcomes and reductions can have a negative impact on mental health outcomes.\nSome groups and individuals do not have the capacity to engage appropriately or have someone that can advocate for them on the circumstances and decisions that can affect them\, or to appeal decisions they feel are unfair. This can impact on health and wellbeing.\n\nIn the context of social justice and social security we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. SUMMARY:A weighty issue: Understanding and Action on Obesity and Health at The Gathering
DESCRIPTION:VHS invites you to join this timely discussion at the Gathering 2018\, as we shine a light on the damage that overweight and obesity inflicts on our health\, dissect the Scottish Government’s plans for a national strategy\, and give some serious thought to what we can all do to support people to live happily and well. \nThe Scottish Health Survey 2016 showed that 65% of adults are overweight or obese and 29% of children. Obesity and overweight are linked to 13 different cancers as well as to Type 2 Diabetes\, asthma\, osteoarthritis and cardio-vascular disease. The underlying determinants of obesity and their relationship with inequalities\, as well as potential solutions\, are complex and poorly understood. The estimated cost of obesity and overweight to Scotland’s health\, economy and society is an eye-watering £4.6 billion. \nJoin the debate as our expert panel explains why obesity may be Scotland’s biggest health challenge yet\, presents the evidence about what works (and doesn’t work)\, and calls us all to action on this weighty issue. \nNHS Health Scotland is supporting this event\, through its learning collaborative programme on inequalities. \nThe consultation period on the Scottish Government’s proposed strategy closed on 31st January: A Healthier Future – Action and Ambitions on Diet\, Activity\, and Healthy Weight. \nRead our response here: VHS Consultation Response \nRead our briefing paper here: A Healthy Weight Briefing \nThe event will be chaired by: \n\nGregor McNie\, ‎Head of External Affairs (Devolved Nations)\, Cancer Research UK\n\nWe will hear from: \n\nDr Drew Walker\, Director of Public Health\, NHS Tayside\nAlison Douglas\, Chief Executive\, Alcohol Focus Scotland\nBella Crowe\, Policy Officer\, Nourish Scotland\nDr Anna Gryka\, Policy Officer\, Obesity Action Scotland\n\nHealthy Weight Agenda 2018 \nBook your place and find out more about the Gathering 2018
