SUMMARY:Engaging with the Scottish Parliament during the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore Engaging with the Scottish Parliament during the Pandemic. How has the pandemic affected the work of the Scottish Parliament\, what is the role of the Committees and MSPs in relation to COVID-19 and what opportunities are there for voluntary health organisations to engage with them during this time? \nAn online round table chaired by Claire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, VHS and with guest speaker Paul Anderson\, Community Outreach Manager\, the Scottish Parliament. Paul will share what’s happening at the Parliament right now – both COVID19 related and non-related – and give an insight into its health related inquiries and calls for views. There will be plenty of opportunity for event participants to share any recent experience of engaging with the Parliament\, Committees and MSPs\, and to discuss how the Parliament might improve its reach and relevance during these challenging and uncertain times. \nThe Community Outreach Team (COT) works with colleagues across the Parliament to enhance opportunities for public engagement in the work of parliamentary committees. By supporting people and communities who wouldn’t otherwise engage with the Parliament\, they channel critical lived experience and insight to help MSPs and committees when they undertake parliamentary inquiries and scrutiny of legislation. To do this they work closely with key partners in communities across Scotland\, including third sector organisations like VHS. \nBook a place here. \nContact Lauren Blair if you have any questions about the event. \n

The event will provide the opportunity for voluntary health organisations to engage with NDS and to explore issues and approaches regarding digital health inequalities. The event is particularly relevant in light of COVID-19 driving more health and care services online. \nNow Fully Booked but you can join the wait list here. \nAims/objectives of the event: \n\nTo explore the ways in which digital health can widen health inequalities\nTo identify good digital health literacy interventions to mitigate health inequalities\nTo agree joint actions taking forward digital health literacy interventions discussed\n\nBackground: \nScotland’s health is improving\, but the gap in health outcomes between the most and least advantaged groups in society is widening. We call this gap health inequalities. Technology has the potential to reduce health inequalities by enabling people to access digital health information and tools to help them to better manage their health and care.  However\, left unchecked\, digital technologies could also widen health inequalities. \n\nHealth inequalities are the ‘systematic differences in the health of people occupying unequal positions in society’.\nThey are strongly associated with socio-economic inequalities but can also result from discrimination.\nHealth inequalities are unfair\, not inevitable\, and must be tackled.\n\nThere is a clear and strong relationship between groups that are digitally excluded and those at greater risk of poor health.  People from excluded groups or living in deprived areas often lack the skills\, ability and means to get online.  Helping them to access and use digital health services and tools can: \n\nimprove their health literacy & help them to better manage their health and care\noffer them a better choice and convenience of service that suits their day to day lives\nimprove our relationships and how we communicate with patients\nreduce the cost and burden on frontline services\n\nWorking in collaboration \nBoth NDS and VHS have programmes of work to mitigate health inequalities. Together we recognise there is a need to engage and collaborate across sectors to help identify\, explore and address interventions which tackle health inequalities from a digital perspective. \n \nNES Digital Service (NDS) was established in 2018 to deliver the National Digital Platform\, a central part of Scotland’s Digital Health and Care Strategy. We have three objectives: \n\nto enable excellent care by making sure health and care practitioners can capture and access the specialist information they need to do their job;\nto provide tools and services which allow NHSScotland colleagues and third parties can build valuable products and services on shared national digital  infrastructure;\nto create the architecture to support key research agendas\, better decision making and service improvement.\n\nBook your place here. \nPlease contact Lauren Blair with any questions. SUMMARY:Rising Food Insecurity in times of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Join the Public Health Scotland Food Insecurity Working Group and Voluntary Health Scotland for our partnership event. \nBook your place here. \nFood insecurity has been an issue for a significant proportion of Scotland’s population for many years and now COVID-19 has caused the issue to become further entrenched. We understand that food insecurity under COVID-19 is firstly rooted in poverty and secondly is an issue of poor access to food. \nPublic Health Scotland (PHS) has been working to identify how COVID-19 is impacting on the factors that give rise to poor health outcomes. PHS has set up a group to focus on food insecurity. It aims to map what is happening at a grassroots levels to tackle food insecurity during COVID-19\, capture effective responses and develop guidance on how to minimise negative health responses caused by COVID-19 and increasing food insecurity. \nTo support the work of this group VHS is hosting a meeting on Zoom to hear from voluntary and community sector organisations so as to identify: \n\nwho the vulnerable groups are\nwhat is working to tackle both the pre-existing food insecurities n Scotland and those that have come to light due to COVID-19.\nwhat long term actions are required to mitigate food insecurity\n\nPlease contact Lauren Blair if you have any questions: lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk

SUMMARY:VHS at The Gathering 2020: Demonstrating Third Sector Impact on Inequalities
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop will present a model to measure the third sector’s contribution to addressing inequalities\, in particular health inequalities.  The model (co-produced by national and local voluntary and community health organisations and commissioners) aims to support third sector organisations to explain\, measure and prove their contribution to tackling inequalities. The longer term aim is to support local authorities\, NHS boards and Public Health Scotland to have a clearer\, evidence based understanding of the third sector’s contribution to tackling inequalities\, through the creation and use of a meaningful measurement tool. \nThe workshop is relevant to: \n\nanyone seeking to understand the value of the sectors interventions which aren’t necessarily “health focused” but help to contribute to tackling health inequalities\nthird sector organisations looking for support to explain to funders and partners more concretely how their work impacts on inequalities\nfunders and commissioners wanting to understand how best to understand and measure the third sector’s contribution to tackling inequalities.\n\nThis workshop is a collaboration between three members of the Inequalities Learning Collaborative: VHS\, Evaluation Support Scotland (ESS) and CHEX (Community Health Exchange)\, with additional support from NHS Health Scotland. \nTea\, coffee and biscuits will be available. \nSpeakers include: \n\nClaire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, Voluntary Health Scotland \nNicola Swan\, Evaluation Support Manager\, Evaluation Support Scotland \nSusan Paxton\, Head of Programmes: Community-led Health and Networking CHEX\nRebecca Haack\, Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust \n\nBook your place here at the gathering website. \nPlease contact Lauren Blair with any queries about this event.

SUMMARY:VHS at the Gathering 2020: Shaping Primary Care for the next generation in rural Scotland
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Government’s vision for the future of primary care is for multi-disciplinary teams\, made up of a variety of health professionals\, working together to support people in their community and to give GPs more time to spend with patients in specific need of their expertise. But what does this mean in a rural context\, and what role does the rural third and community sector have to play in helping transform primary care? Rural Scotland has a growing elderly population\, increasing demand for treatment and care\, a dispersed population and challenges associated with the workforce supply for health and social care – all combining to have an impact on primary care services. \n\nHow to put general practice and primary care at the heart of the healthcare system in rural Scotland\nHow to ensure people needing care are more informed and empowered\, have access to the right person at the right time\, and can remain living at home where possible.\n\nThis workshop will be of particular interest to voluntary and community health organisations and third sector interfaces.
