SUMMARY:Human Rights Bill- Kitchen Table Discussion
DESCRIPTION:VHS are hosting a Kitchen Table discussion\, in person\, at our office in Edinburgh\, on the morning of Tuesday 5th September\, to discuss the Scottish Government Human Rights Bill Consultation. We have invited selected members\, challengers and critical friends to join us at the Kitchen Table. Please contact Lauren Blair if you would like to express and interest in attending. \nThe Scottish Government has launched the consultation gathering views to help inform the  Human Rights Bill. The Bill will incorporate a range of economic\, social and cultural rights into Scots law for the first time. One of the rights listed is ‘The right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health”\, this will be the primary focus of our consultation response. However\, we are also interested in hearing our members’ views on incorporating the convention on the elimination of racial discrimination\, the elimination of discrimination against women and the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities\, not to mention plans to recognise the right to a healthy environment. So many of our rights are intertwined and impact our health and wellbeing\, we want to hear what they mean to our members and their work. \nWe are holding a Kitchen Table discussion to help us cast a critical eye over our consultation response focusing on health\, and to benefit from the perspectives\, expertise and experience of people with professional or personal knowledge of the issues. The main body of the meeting will be concentrating on the consultation questions. We especially want to hear from any members who have imbedded a human rights based approach to their work supporting people’s health and wellbeing. \nListening to\, learning from and collaborating with our stakeholders is crucial to enable VHS to put forward important views on the right to health and the role of human rights in tackling health inequalities as part of our consultation response. \nPlease contact Lauren Blair with any further questions. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Member meet up- Broader Reach and Stronger Voice
DESCRIPTION:In November 2022\, VHS published Broader Reach and Stronger Voice: Reflecting on the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. This was a qualitative study asking our member organisations and wider network about the inclusivity of the COVID-19 vaccine programme and collaboration with the third sector. \nAt our event on the 26th of January\, we will be bringing VHS members and partners together to discuss the potential and opportunities in partnership working for health. \nBook your place here.\nThe clear overwhelming message from the third sector is that we want to be more involved in future public health interventions to reduce inequalities. The COVID-19 vaccine programme has provided us with multiple positive examples of how partnership working can benefit communities and individuals. \nThird sector and voluntary organisations are trusted by the communities we serve and are therefore well placed to support future public health interventions. The sector is already working with communities who are often underserved and falling through the cracks of services. Our research underlines the value of partnering with representatives from communities and that public health input doesn’t always need to take place on NHS ground. \nAt this event we will discuss how do we enable partnerships to be nurtured and sustained to make sure that those often-underserved groups are supported by trusted community voices to access healthcare? \nHow do we ensure that the third sector is valued as a trusted partner in future interventions to reduce inequalities? \nWe will hear from: \n\nKimberley Somerside\, Policy and Engagement Lead at Voluntary Health Scotland\nDr Lewis Clarke\, Research and Policy Officer\, HIV Scotland\n\nBook your place here. \n  \nPlease contact Lauren Blair if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Community Link Workers & Audit Scotland- Adult Mental Health 10 Nov
DESCRIPTION:***This event is aimed specifically at Community Link Workers who are working directly within a Primary Care setting in Scotland. Managers/Programme Leads for these Community Link Workers are also welcome to attend.*** \nThis event will take place online on Zoom. \nAs part of Audit Scotland’s ongoing performance audit of mental health services for adults in Scotland\, Community Link Workers are invited to participate in one of two online focus groups facilitated jointly by Audit Scotland and Voluntary Health Scotland. The groups have very limited spaces. \nAudit Scotland are committed to an audit of Mental Health Services\, which will look across the wide range of services that aim to support and improve the mental health and wellbeing of adults in Scotland. The overall aim of this performance audit is to answer the question: \nHow effectively are adult mental health services across Scotland being delivered? \n The focus groups will seek the views of Community Link Workers in relation to: \n\nWhat progress has been made in improving adult mental health services across Scotland since the publication of the mental health strategy 20172027? This will include topics such as whether adults have access to timely and appropriate support that improves outcomes\, how well partners work together to deliver services\, and work to tackle mental health inequalities. \nHow well managed are the resources for Scotland’s adult mental health services? This will include workforce pressures and how these are being addressed\, and how public money is used to support adults’ mental health and wellbeing. \nHow achievable are plans to address the ongoing and upcoming challenges facing the delivery of adult mental health services?\n\nThe voices of Community Link Workers will provide invaluable insight to this research as you have first-hand knowledge and experience of the issues people face when accessing mental health services\, and of the services being delivered. \nWe will be joined by: \nEva Thomas-Tudo\, Audit Manager \, Audit Scotland \nVeronica Cameron\, Senior Auditor\, Audit Scotland \nFind out more about the Audit Scotland work here. \nBook your place here.\nWe are running this focus group again on the 15th November 2-4 pm. Book a place for the 15th November here. \n Please contact Lauren Blair with any questions about the event. \nThis event is for the Scottish Community Link Worker Network. SUMMARY:VHS at The Gathering: Building a Healthy and Health Creating Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Voluntary Health Scotland brings together leaders from some of Scotland’s most important health charities for a timely debate on health inequalities\, the right to health and the need for more inclusive healthcare. Health inequalities are the unjust and avoidable differences in people’s health across the population and between different groups. Scotland compares poorly on health inequalities compared to most of Western Europe\, which means that the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health is not being enjoyed equally. This longstanding injustice has been brought into sharper focus by the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe root causes of health inequalities lie outside of the NHS\, but modern health care has enormous potential to prevent the onset of illness and to delay its progression. As a result\, inequitable access to effective health care can in itself be an inadvertent yet powerful driver of health inequalities. At the same time\, the good health of individuals depends on healthy communities\, a healthy society and a healthy planet. \nScotland’s health charities are at the heart of efforts to create better health for people\, especially those individuals and communities who might otherwise be marginalised\, missing or overlooked in society’s efforts to improve health outcomes.  They do this through research\, campaigning\, policy work\, education\, advocacy and direct services. Our panel will offer a rich and considered insight into what ‘building back better’ and ‘recovery’ must involve in order to seriously address Scotland’s health inequalities. \nThis event will be relevant to all third sector staff\, volunteers and board members with a direct interest in health policy and practice\, including health charities\, community health organisations\, other voluntary organisations\, TSIs\, social enterprises. \nEvent Aims: \nto explore how can communities\, third sector and public sector organisations work jointly to reduce health inequalities within local communities. \nTo examine what must change in order to support local level actions and align national policy and legislation behind them. \nto discuss how we engender macro-level change to influence the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nSpeakers: \n\nHilda Campbell\, CEO\, COPE Scotland\nBushra Riaz\, Policy Officer\, Kidney Research UK\nAlastair Hudson\, CEO\, HIV Scotland\nJohn Watson\, Associate Director Scotland\, Stroke Association\n\nEvent will be chaired by Claire Stevens\, CEO\,  Voluntary Health Scotland \nBookings will be open soon on via the Gathering website. Please contact Lauren Blair for more information about this event.

SUMMARY:Health and social care strategy for older people consultation event
DESCRIPTION:Join VHS and the Scottish Government to discuss a Health and Social Care Strategy for Older People. \nFollowing the Scottish Government’s Statement of Intent published in March 2021\, they have engaged with a wide range of older people to get their views\non their health and social care services\, how these have been affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic and how these services could improve\, to better meet the needs of our ageing population. The importance of health and social care of older people has never been more urgent – with a quarter of Scotland’s population projected to be aged 65 years and over by mid-2043\, and the impact that the pandemic has had on older people. This has brought to light the inequalities that many older people face in being able to access a wide range of support services\, allowing them to maintain their health and wellbeing and help prevent social isolation and frailty\, which can then lead to falls and ill health. \nView the consultation documents here. \nAt this event we will discuss the consultation and what it means for the third sector. We will hear from: \n\nLouise Scott\, Team Leader – Older People’s Health\, Older Peoples Health\, Cancer and End of Life Care Unit\, Healthcare Quality and Improvement\, Scottish Government\nClaire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, Voluntary Health Scotland\n\nBook your place here.\nPlease contact Lauren Blair with any questions

SUMMARY:VHS Member's Meet up: January 2022
DESCRIPTION:VHS would like to invite our members to join us on the 25th of January for an online meet up. \nIt has been nearly 2 years that we have been working through a pandemic. As we start 2022\, we are asking our members to join us as we look to the year ahead and discuss our health priorities and opportunities for 2022. \nAs we start the new year with Covid-19 restrictions re-introduced\, it is more important to come together as group to connect and jointly discuss what our hopes and aspirations are for the months ahead. During this challenging time we want to offer a space to connect and share with other VHS members. VHS is keen to hear how organisations and their service users are affected\, what organisations are trying to do to reconfigure services and activities\, as that will help us understand what more we could do to help. \nPlease join us and book your place here. \nContact Lauren Blair if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Exploring enablers and barriers to uptake of the COVID-19 Vaccine
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join Voluntary Health Scotland at this event exploring the likely impact of the Covid-19 vaccine programme on health inequalities. \n*****Book your place here***** \nDuring February VHS is carrying out important research across the third sector to help ensure that the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in Scotland doesn’t widen the health inequalities gap by missing vulnerable groups. We are keen to ensure that the opportunity to get vaccinated is made as easy as possible for everyone in Scotland\, including those who are furthest away from public services and who already face a wide range of inequalities. We will be feeding back our short survey results to the Public Health Scotland Evaluation of the Flu Vaccination COVID Vaccination (FVCV) programme and to the Scottish Government teams co-ordinating the COVID-19 Vaccination programme. \nIf you are a third sector organisation working actively to support people’s health and wellbeing\, you can help by attending this event to share your experience and local intelligence. We also welcome attendees working for the NHS\, health and social care partnerships and other public sector services.  \nSpeakers: Kiren Zubairi\, Policy Engagement Officer\, Voluntary Health Scotland\, will present the research findings. Other speakers to be announced.  \n*********Book your place here**********. \nPlease contact Lauren Blair if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Falling Off a Cliff at 65: serious mental health issues in later life\, Feb 2021
DESCRIPTION:VHS and The Open University are hosting two\, invitation only\, round table meetings to continue the discussions on serious mental health issues later in life. \nThe issue we are seeking to address is the situation some people with serious mental health conditions (other than or alongside dementia) find themselves in once they become 65. Issues we have been exploring include under-diagnosis\, under-provision\, poor transitions from ‘adult’ services to ‘older people’ services\, discrimination and flouting of human rights. For some people with serious mental health issues\, their 65th birthday is like ‘falling off a cliff’ in terms of service provision; for example\, their CPN may be removed. A key issue to address is the transition point from adult to older people services\, this is where things unravel for some people. \nBy March last year we had gathered a level of evidence\, through round tables held in 2019 and through two surveys conducted by NHS Health Scotland and Dr Adam Daly respectively. The work then paused\, unfortunately but of necessity\, due to Covid-19. \nFirstly\, we will look to explore what has changed during the year of covid-19 for older people with serious mental health conditions\, and secondly to start to co-produce recommendations for changes in mental health and older people’s policy leading to improvements in services. With the involvement of the Open University we anticipate that further research areas may be developed. \nThe discussion paper and evidence from the previous phase of the work can be read here. \nIf you have any questions or would like to register interest in the meetings\, please contact Lauren Blair.

SUMMARY:VHS Annual Conference & AGM 2020
DESCRIPTION:#WeArePublicHealth: Building Forward for Health and Wellbeing\nView the full programme here.\nOur 2020 Annual Conference and AGM take place via Zoom with 4 varied sessions over 2 days to allow flexible access for joining us. You can register for one or both days\, but we encourage you to book for both days to get the full conference experience and value. \nWith home working still the default position for many\, we’re bringing you the best of our event in a bite size format. As ever you’ll have the opportunity to listen\, share ideas and thinking\, network and discuss. Our annual conference is one of the leading health events in Scotland\, bringing together stakeholders from across the third and community sectors\, Public Health Scotland\, NHS\, national and local government\, other public bodies\, and academia. \nAs we continue to live with the COVID-19 pandemic how do we ensure that our experience and learning are what shapes the future for health and wellbeing\, the right to health\, and health inequalities? The voluntary health sector pivoted rapidly to plug the gaps and provide vital emergency responses to pressing new needs as soon as lockdown and social distancing came into force. We know our role remains pivotal now the agenda is one of remobilisation\, recovery and building back better\, and that’s an exciting but challenging agenda. \nThe Scottish Government’s Programme for Government includes a commitment to ‘continue to develop a world‑class public health service that builds on our COVID‑19 response’. As we head towards the winter and a likely second wave of  the virus\, what questions do we need to ask? Has the pandemic shifted our understanding and appreciation of public health for good? How do we empower people and communities to contribute to as well as benefit from public health? Let’s discuss what needs to happen to make public health partnership working with third sector organisations the new norm so we can ‘build forward’ together. \nOur Programme\nDay One: Wednesday 4th November\nSession One: Opening Conference Session and Keynote Addresses\n10.30am-12.30pm \nConference Chair: James Jopling\, Head of British Heart Foundation Scotland \nKeynote Address: Professor Jim McGoldrick\, Chair of Public Health Scotland \nKeynote Address: Professor Kate Ardern\, Director of Public Health\, Wigan Council \nWelcome: Claire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, VHS \nSession two: Interactive Workshops in Breakout Rooms\n1.30pm -3.00pm \nWorkshops led by: \nLindsay Paterson and Elizabeth Hurst-High  Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems Andrew Connal\, Covid-19 Modelling and Analysis Hub\, Scottish Government; Annie Macleod\, Parkinson’s UK\, Wilma Paterson\, and Alex Gallacher\, British Red Cross; Allan Johnstone\, Inverclyde Community Development Trust; Charlene Elliott\, CVS Inverclyde \nDay Two: Thursday 5th November \nSession One: Interactive Workshops in Breakout Rooms \n11am-12.30pm \nWorkshops led by: \nLindsay Paterson and Elizabeth Hurst- High\, Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems; Andrew Connal\, Covid-19 Modelling and Analysis Hub\, Scottish Government; Julie Wardrop\, CANDU (Dundee Cancer Support Network) and Tanith Muller Parkinson’s UK; Wilma Paterson and Alex Gallagher\, British Red Cross; Allan Johnstone\, Inverclyde Community Development Trust; Charlene Elliott\, CVS Inverclyde \nSession Two: Closing Addresses\, Presentation of Poster Winner and AGM\n1.30-3.30 pm \nConference Chair: James Jopling\, Head of British Heart Foundation Scotland \nKeynote Address: Professor Maggie Rae\, President\, Faculty of Public Health \nQuestions and Discussion: Hearing from third sector finalists from our poster competition \nAnnouncing the Poster Competition Winner \nVHS AGM \n\nOur Exhibitors\nWe are delighted to be joined by the following organisations- find out more and read the blogs here \n \nOur 2020 Poster Competition \nAnd our finalists are: \n\nArt in Healthcare: Room for Art- Keeping participants creative and well in their homes during Covid 19\nBreast Buddie Angus: Virtual Antenatal Education: Informing families and facilitating friendships\nCLiCK: Meeting the Needs of Women Who Sell or Exchange Sex or Images During the Coronavirus Pandemic\nMarie Curie:Past\, present and future: Caring for those approaching the end of life in Scottish Hospitals\nNational Breastfeeding Helpline: Our Response to the Pandemic\nSamaritans: Now\, more than ever\, we are here to listen\nThe Breastfeeding Network: Virtual peer support for new parents in Ayrshire\nWest Dunbartonshire Community and Voluntary Services: West Dunbartonshire Cares\n\nSee the posters\, read the blogs and vote for your winner here.
