SUMMARY:What more can public services do to reduce inequalities in Scotland?

SUMMARY:Public Health Review Third Sector Sounding Board
DESCRIPTION:A review of public health is currently underway in Scotland. Called for by Scottish Ministers in November last year\, the review is being carried out by an expert review group\, which includes Voluntary Health Scotland. The review group\, chaired by Dr Hamish Wilson\, met in December 2014 and will meet monthly\, aiming to report to Ministers in summer of this year. \nCurrently the group is developing its engagement with stakeholders and VHS is holding a Sounding Board meeting to give an opportunity to third sector colleagues to contribute their thoughts and experiences to the debate. We are inviting a targeted list of organisations and individuals in order to ensure that discussion is rooted in experience and understanding of public health from a third sector perspective. \nThe sounding board will be facilitated by Audrey Birt (former Chair of the Health & Social Care Alliance) and we will be joined by Heather Cowan\, the policy lead at the Scottish Government for the public health review and by Grant Sugden\, CEO\, of Waverley Care\, who is the voluntary sector (VHS) representative on the review group. \nThis is a great opportunity to ensure that the activities and experiences of third sector organisations are recognised in the review and that the review group takes an informed cross-sectoral perspective in its work. \nFor more information on this meeting\, please contact Lauren Blair  or call 0131 474 6189.

SUMMARY:Living in the Gap: a voluntary health sector perspective on health inequalities in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Ministerial address: Jamie Hepburn MSP\, Minister for Sport\, Health Improvement & Mental Health\nHosted by Murdo Fraser MSP\nFairfax Somerville Room\, The Scottish Parliament\nOur evening reception will be held at the Scottish Parliament\, kindly hosted by Murdo Fraser MSP on Wednesday the 18th of March. The purpose of the event is to come together to discuss our new report ‘Living in the Gap: a voluntary health sector perspective on health inequalities in Scotland.’ \nThe crux of the report is the value that the third sector can provide at a localised level to confront health inequalities. This report examined the work of Voluntary Health organisations across Scotland and includes 10 case studies which highlight the wide range of work currently happening in Scotland. \nOur event will be an opportunity to discuss: \n\nHealth inequalities across Scotland – do we have shared language?\nHow does the voluntary health sector contribute to tackling health inequalities\nHow can we build on the report conclusions and come together to effectively tackle inequalities across Scotland?\n\nWe are delighted that Jamie Hepburn MSP\, Minister for Sport\, Health Improvement and Mental Health will address our guests. We anticipate this event will be an important evening of discussion and networking. \nIf you would like more information on this event please contact Lauren Blair lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk \n

SUMMARY:Edinburgh- Audit Scotland: Health and Social Care Integration and the Third Sector
DESCRIPTION:Afternoon workshop with Lunch \n12:30-15:30\, Tuesday 26 January 2016 \nHayweight House\, 23 Lauriston Street\, Edinburgh\, EH3 9DQ \nAn opportunity to actively engage with Audit Scotland\, following publication of their first audit on health and social care integration. \nAudit Scotland gives independent assurance to the people of Scotland that public money is spent properly\, efficiently and effectively.  Their report on Health and Social Care Integration was published 3rd December 2015. It says that significant risks must be addressed if the reform of health and social care is to fundamentally change how services are delivered and improve outcomes for the people who use them. \nAudit Scotland is keen to strengthen its engagement with the third sector as an important stakeholder in health and social care\, and VHS is coordinating this workshop on behalf of the Third Sector Health and Social Care Advisory Group. This builds on the discussion VHS organised with Audit Scotland during the audit process itself. \nThe workshop will enable Audit Scotland to present the report to voluntary\, community\, social enterprise or housing organisations involved in the integration agenda. It will provide an opportunity to share third sector views with Audit Scotland\, discuss the implications of the report and explore how we can build on the recommendations. \nVHS have prepared a short briefing paper on the Audit Scotland report- Briefing Paper – Audit Scotland Health and Social Care Integration and the Third Sector \nView the Agenda- Audit Scotland Agenda 26 Jan \nGordon Neill Audit Scotland \nPlease contact Lauren Blair if you have any question Lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk

SUMMARY:Glasgow- Audit Scotland: Health and Social Care Integration and the Third Sector
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to actively engage with Audit Scotland\, following publication of their first audit on health and social care integration. Audit Scotland gives independent assurance to the people of Scotland that public money is spent properly\, efficiently and effectively. Their report on Health and Social Care Integration was published 3rd December 2015. It says that significant risks must be addressed if the reform of health and social care is to fundamentally change how services are delivered and improve outcomes for the people who use them. Audit Scotland is keen to strengthen its engagement with the third sector as an important stakeholder in health and social care\, and VHS is coordinating this workshop on behalf of the Third Sector Health and Social Care Advisory Group. This builds on the discussion VHS organised with Audit Scotland during the audit process itself. The workshop will enable Audit Scotland to present the report to voluntary\, community\, social enterprise or housing organisations involved in the integration agenda. It will provide an opportunity to share third sector views with Audit Scotland\, discuss the implications of the report and explore how we can build on the recommendations. \nPlaces are now fully booked\, please contact Lauren Blair to be added to the waiting list: 0131 474 6189 or lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk \nAudit Scotland Agenda 3 Feb \nBriefing Paper – Audit Scotland Health and Social Care Integration and the Third Sector \nAfternoon workshop with lunch \n12:30-15:00\, Wednesday 3 February 2016 \nSFHA Office\, Third Floor\, Sutherland House\, 149 St Vincent Street\, Glasgow G2 5NW
