SUMMARY:Health Inequalities Inquiry Engagement Event: Equalities and Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Parliament’s Health\, Social Care & Sport Committee is holding an inquiry into what can be done about health inequalities. The Parliament’s Community & Participation Team are hosting four informal engagement events as part of their scrutiny of the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nThis online engagement event will focus on equalities and human rights. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nSocial injustice can create conditions that can negatively affect the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. \n\nSome individuals and groups\, most often those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged\, have poorer health outcomes than others.\nThese individuals and groups can experience barriers accessing health and care\, these can be physical\, financial\, mental or social related to stigma/discrimination.\nHuman rights violations can contribute to and exacerbate poor health.\n\nIn the context of equalities and human rights we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. If you are interested in contributing to this session we would be grateful if you could contact Kimberley with your expression of interest.

SUMMARY:Health Inequalities Inquiry Engagement Event: Economy and Employment
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Parliament’s Health\, Social Care & Sport Committee is holding an inquiry into what can be done about health inequalities. The Parliament’s Community & Participation Team are hosting four informal engagement events as part of their scrutiny of the wider determinants of health inequalities. \nThis online engagement event will focus on economy and employment. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nIncome and employment status are strongly associated with health and wellbeing. \n\n\n\nPoor health can limit access to employment.\nUnemployment and job insecurity can lead to poor health and wellbeing.\nLow incomes can prevent people from participating in social life and day to day activities.\nFood poverty and insecurity can lead to poor health.\nIncome can be related to life expectancy\, with those on higher salaries expected to live longer.\nMany physical and mental health outcomes improve as income rises.\n\n\n\nIn the context of economy and employment we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. SUMMARY:Health Inequalities Inquiry Engagement Event: Local Government\, Housing and Planning
\nThis online engagement event will focus on local government\, housing and planning. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nCommunity life\, social connections and having a voice in local decisions can affect health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. \n\nAccess to housing\, local amenities and how local environments are planned and laid out can all have an impact on an individual’s health.\nLiving in poor housing – a cold\, damp home – can lead to poor physical health and respiratory problems.\nHigh housing costs and increasing bills may place a strain on people’s finances\, forcing individuals to make a choice between heating and good quality food.\nPoor town planning can limit an individual’s access to community assets and services\, especially those with ill health.\nPoor health can impact on educational outcomes\, and education has an impact on our health outcomes.\nAccess to social care can make a difference to health and wellbeing\, including helping individuals participate in society and improving mental health\, enabling rehabilitation and improving community connections.\n\nIn the context of local government\, housing and planning we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. \nThis online engagement event will focus on social justice and social security. It will give organisations the chance to engage with parliamentarians about the wider determinants of health. \nChanges in social security policies can have significant effects on health and wellbeing. \n\nAusterity\, cuts to benefits and tax credits can have an impact on health and wellbeing\, and life expectancy\, this can often have the worst impact in the most deprived areas.\nImprovements in social security benefits can improve mental health outcomes and reductions can have a negative impact on mental health outcomes.\nSome groups and individuals do not have the capacity to engage appropriately or have someone that can advocate for them on the circumstances and decisions that can affect them\, or to appeal decisions they feel are unfair. This can impact on health and wellbeing.\n\nIn the context of social justice and social security we would like participants to consider: \n\nWhat do you think are the key factors which have negative impact upon people’s health?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers to people improving their health?\nWhat change(s) would you like to see which would help improve people’s health?\n\nVoluntary Health Scotland is helping facilitate each of the engagement events and we are looking for expressions of interest from those wanting to take part. SUMMARY:The Role of Culture in the Health & Wellbeing of Older People “With Age\, Art and Life Become One”
DESCRIPTION:This is a Arts Culture Health & Wellbeing Scotland event. \nBook your place here. \nWith a title inspired by a quotation from Georges Braque\, at this event we will explore the role arts and culture play in the health\, wellbeing and care of older people whether they live independently or in residential/nursing care and for those who are in hospital. \nOlder people’s lives have been significantly affected by Covid-19\, not least the distressing levels of social isolation and loneliness very many have endured for over 12 months. The removal of much appreciated activities\, human contact and services have taken their toll physically\, mentally and spiritually on our older population. How have arts and culture interventions made a difference during these difficult days\, what challenges have been faced\, and how can the lessons learned help shape the recovery and renewal of services for the future? What can the arts\, culture and care sectors share and learn from one another about compassionate\, person-centred and enabling care? What do we mean by art and life becoming one\, with age? Join the conversation to find out. \nSpeakers confirmed: \n\nClaire Stevens\, Chief Executive\, Voluntary Health Scotland \nRobbie McGhee\, Chair of Arts\, Culture\, Health and Wellbeing Scotland and Associate Director\, Art in Hospital \nDonald Macaskill\, Chief Executive\, Scottish Care\nAnne Gallacher\, Director\, Luminate \nBarbara McEwan-Gulliver\, Artistic Director\, Art in Hospital\nJoe Traynor\, Head of Museums Development\, Museums Galleries Scotland\nLeesa Mackintosh\, Community Link Worker & Alison Leitch\, Community Link Worker\, Area Lead\, North Edinburgh\n\nBook your place at the event here. \nPlease contact Lauren Blair at VHS with any questions about this event. \nFind out more about Arts Culture Health & Wellbeing Scotland here : www.achws.org \nWhy not follow ACHWS on Facebook and Twitter @achwscotland  \nJoin the Arts Culture Health & Wellbeing Scotland network for free here https://achws.org/join-us

SUMMARY:NHSScotland Event
DESCRIPTION:Scottish Exhibition & Conference\nCentre\, Glasgow 23 – 24 June 2015 \nVoluntary Health Scotland have been chosen to present a poster on our recently launched health inequalities report: Living in the Gap. \nThe NHSScotland Event provides individuals working in and with NHSScotland with the opportunity to consider and discuss some of the important challenges for health and care now and in the future. The programme for the NHSScotland Event has been designed around the 2020 Vision for Health and Social Care. Showcasing the best in health and care from the public\, private\, voluntary\, academic and scientific communities\, the annual two-day gathering will provide delegates with a unique opportunity to meet people from different sectors to share ideas about how we can improve the outcomes and experience of care in Scotland. \nThe Event will also highlight some of the most powerful examples of how quality is being taken forward in the newly emerging integration landscape. \nNow in its tenth year\, the NHSScotland Event has gone from strength to strength and brings together over 1\,500 health and care leaders\, key decision-makers and frontline staff from across NHSScotland and its partners and provides them with the opportunity to listen\, learn and participate in crucial dialogue about the future of health and care in Scotland. \nPlease click here to find out more information.

SUMMARY:Caring for Older People in Scotland 3rd Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Voluntary Health Scotland are exhibiting at this event. \nCaring for our older people in Scotland is a complex task. The number of older people is on the rise with people living longer with a multitude of health and care needs. There is an immediate importance of addressing this\, evident through a range of policies from the Scottish Government that look at our rising care needs. The last few years has seen major changes unfold through the Public Bodies Act 2014. The new legislation aims to deliver an integrated yet flexible care system especially important to many older people who do have a range of care needs and health issues. \nCurrently there is a review of the national care standards. The human rights of each person need to be embedded strongly in all care approaches. Receiving proper care and being treated with dignity is the backbone that is essential to all older people in Scotland. \nCare provisions and the needs of Scotland’s older people need to be met\, but we also need to have greater equality across Scotland. Although life expectancy is rising\, those living in poorer areas of Scotland can have life expectancy cut by over 10 years. The preventative approach to health for older people must be addressed alongside the immediate care needs to ensure future delivery is not an impossible task. \nWe hope to bring together a range of delegates from the care profession who have a role in older people care in Scotland. The day will look to explore the difficulties ahead but also examine the opportunities and what is currently working well. \nTopics to be discussed: \n\nEquality in care\nNational Care Standards\nReshaping care for older people\nHealth and social care integration\nGetting it right for older people\nHuman rights\, dignity and privacy in older people care\nCommunity role in care\nPreventative health measures and promotion of healthy ageing\nComplaints in care\nStaffing and skills\n\n  #olderpeoplecare\nThere is a cost to attend this event- please see the MacKay Hannah web page for further information \n  \n

SUMMARY:Health Benefits from Healthcare Setting – building stronger partnerships between Health & Social Care and the Third Sector
DESCRIPTION:Using NHS green spaces to enhance health \n\nScottish Natural Heritage\, NHS Health Scotland and Forestry Commission Scotland have sought Voluntary Health Scotland’s support to highlight how the third sector can be a key partner with the NHS in making more effective use of green spaces for health promoting activities.  We have enlisted the support of Senscot so as to have a joint input at the good practice event taking place on 28th May at SNH’s Battleby Conference Centre near Perth. \n\nWhat’s the event about?\nThis event will explore how the grounds and neighbouring green space of healthcare settings such as hospitals\, care homes\, day centre services and GP practices can provide a sustainable health-promoting resource. The third sector is already involved in facilitating the use of the natural environment around many healthcare settings\, and in some cases is contributing to management and maintenance\, but there are opportunities for more engagement. This event will bring together key players from the health and third sectors to share practical examples\, explore links with the NHS Greenspace Demonstration Project\, and discuss how best to maximise effective use of the outdoors through partnership working. \n\nWho’s it for?\nThe event is relevant to staff in the Health and Third sectors who have a responsibility or interest in working together to deliver environmental\, health and community benefits from the natural environment around various types of healthcare settings.\nHealth & social care sector interest includes Area Health Board staff responsible for Estate management\, Health Promoting Health Service\, Third sector engagement\, Physical Activity promotion; plus facility managers in the voluntary sector; Community Health Partnerships; Health Improvement teams. Third sector interest includes health / environment organisations that are providing\, or would like to provide\, Green Exercise or practical environmental improvements at healthcare settings. \n  \nTo request a booking form contact Sharing Good Practice  or phone: 01738 458555/6

SUMMARY:2nd UK People’s Health Assembly
DESCRIPTION:VHS joins the UK People’s Health Assembly\nVoluntary Health Scotland Chief Officer Claire Stevens is presenting at the 2nds Health Assembly on 11 April 2014.  The focus of the Assembly will be on building a progressive health movement in a time of austerity and social exclusion. Claire will share the voluntary health perspective on this\, drawing on what VHS members have told us about the challenges and opportunities they perceive if health inequalities are to be reduced.Edinburgh\, 10-12 April 2014 \nAbout the Event\nAfter inspiring discussions on health\, justice and the state of democracy held in Nottingham in July 2012\, the UK People’s Health Movement invites you to the second UK People’s Health Assembly. The focus will be on ‘building a progressive health movement in a time of austerity and social exclusion’. However\, 2nd PHA is not just about developing and strengthening our movement. It is also about impacting directly in the struggle for social justice: health for all\, decent living and working conditions for all\, equity and environmental justice. \nThere is an interesting programme\, with inspirational talks by distinguished speakers and several opportunities to share\, learn\, brainstorm and build synergies on cross-cutting issues of: Austerity and health; Social exclusion and vulnerabilities; and Environmental justice and occupational health. These three themes run in parallel through the Assembly\, moving from storytelling about people’s experiences\, to analysis\, to solutions and alternatives. In the final plenary these discussions come together to hear experiences of health movements from across the globe including India\, South Africa\, Uganda and Europe. \nSpeakers include Lesley Riddoch\, David Woodward\, Prof. Andrew Watterson\, Prof. Tracey Shildrick\, Louise Taggart\, Cathy McCormack\, Alex Scott-Samuel\, Sonya Scott among others. The assembly will offer a dynamic space and witness diverse participation from community based groups\, networks\, and activists who will contribute to discussions on the above themes. These include: Poverty Alliance\, NHS Health Scotland\, CHEX and Scottish Community Development Centre\, Child Poverty Action Group\, Friends of the Earth\, Hazards Campaign\, Voluntary Health Scotland\, Nottingham Refugee Forum\, Alliance for Cancer Prevention\, Biofuel Watch\, Women’s International Group\, FRAE Fife\, NOURISH\, GPs at the Deep End\, Medsin\, Medact\, Scottish Refugee Council\, NKS\, Forum Against Corporate Killers and others. \nFor further information on the assembly\, please visit the website \nhttp://www.qmu.ac.uk/iihd/2nd_UK_Peoples_Health_Assembly/Default.htm
